Anne's obituary

Marguerite Anne Gillies (Russell), April 22, 1952-August 10, 2025, passed away in her 73rd year peacefully surrounded by family and dear friends at Credit Valley Hospital. Anne is predeceased by her parents Margaret Russell and Bernard Russell, loving husband Allen Gillies, cherished son Robert Gillies and her beloved dog Louie. Anne will be deeply missed by her brother Patrick Russell, niece Charlena Russell (Kristal), dear family friends Patrick Gilhooly (Amy), Amanda and Anita. She was beloved in the Gillies family and nephews Rob and John will forever cherish their memories with her, Allen and Robert. She will be fondly remembered by her many friends, especially her former colleagues from the hospitals in which she worked.

Anne’s Life:

Anne was a fiercely dedicated mother, wife, aunt and friend. Her beautiful energy filled any space she was in, and although small in stature, she was huge in personality and character. On her final day her nieces Charlena and Kristal, along with dear friends Patrick and Amanda all stayed by her side, sharing their favourite memories they had with Anne. The room was filled with love, tears and laughter. The prevailing themes of her loving and nurturing nature came through loudly. Her sense of humour and Anne’s no nonsense way of expressing herself wove through every story and memory like thematic threads. One of her former colleagues aptly described her as “a perfect mix of sweet and feisty.” She was one of a kind. A strong, extremely independent person who inspired many.

She was an amazing mother, sister, daughter and aunt. She absolutely adored her son Rob. Gone too soon, both Al and Rob were deeply missed. She cherished her memories of family time together on Lake Joe. Those memories meant more than words could have expressed.

Anne was a nurse for her entire career. She worked hard and approached each patient with compassion, patience and a nurturing spirit, winning over even the most difficult patients.

She was beyond capable of navigating any situation and approached life with calm fearlessness, deep compassion, empathy and understanding. She valued privacy and was very humble, never one to brag about her many achievements.

She loved being a nurse and proudly held her post at Toronto General Hospital for decades. Even after retiring, she worked part-time at Credit Valley Hospital. She cherished her friends Amanda, Anita and colleagues earning the nickname “Mother” at work.

Anne also played hard. She treasured summer visits in Muskoka with family, time with friends on the Moon River, BBQ’s in Mississauga, cheering and supporting Rob at hockey games and weekend ski trips with close friends each winter. She will be missed by many including school friends Liz and Lorena whom she continued to keep in touch with.

Thank You:

Words can’t express the deep gratitude felt towards the amazing team at Credit Valley Hospital. They listened to Anne and gave her the highest level of respect and care.

A massive thank you to PSW Michelle (Love From the Heart Home Care) for the excellent level of care you provided for our dear Aunt. You quickly gained her trust with your expertise. We can’t thank you enough for your attention to detail, initiative, sincerity and commitment to her comfort.

Anne will be buried in a private ceremony with family and close friends.
