Margie's obituary

Margie Gant, age 94, peacefully passed away on July 28th In The Woodlands, Texas. Margie was born November 25th, 1925 to John (Vanni) and Dora Santangelo in Beaumont, Texas. She grew up in a loud, loving Sicilian family with many aunts, uncles and cousins. She had a beautiful soprano voice and started performing at 16 singing Opera accompanied by her sister Flora Mae on piano. She attended Lamar University and graduated from Sam Houston University with a major in music and a minor in education. On June 18th, 1955 she married Robert S Gant and moved to Port Arthur, Texas where she became a stay-at-home mom and had four daughters. The family moved to Huffman, Texas in 1976, where Margie later earned a master's degree in special education and taught at Huffman Middle school until she retired. She loved teaching and continued substitute teaching and volunteering at Huffman Middle school after her retirement. Her passion for teaching and singing continued after retirement as she spent many days volunteering at the May Community Center teaching computer courses, singing with the May Belles and Beaus and learning to make jewelry. She later moved to The Conservatory in The Woodlands to be near her daughter, Janet. She continued to sing late in life, breaking out in song at a moment's notice and carrying her sheet music with her in her walker. If someone admired a necklace that she made and was wearing she happily offered to sell it to them. She became an Ambassador at The Conservatory introducing potential new residents to the facility and her friends that lived there. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her husband of almost 40 years. She is survived by her four daughters, Gail Gant of Houston; Cheryl Gant and her wife Beth of Silver Spring, Maryland; Janet Jordan of The Woodlands; Mary Norton and her husband Chris of Keller; and five grandchildren: Jeff Jordan, Matt Jordan, Ashley Jordan, Avery Norton and his wife Erin, and John Reed Norton. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her, her laughter, and her love for breaking into song.

“Mother’s hold their children’s hands for a while, but their hearts forever.”
