Margaret's obituary
Our beloved Margaret Scherbing passed away on August 14th, 2023. After a couple of months of hospice care, she passed away in her home of natural causes.
Known by many as Marge, she was a loving and cherished individual. She was a very sweet, generous and intentional woman. She lived a life with many great adventures. Tough to the very end, her life included many hardships, yet despite all the challenges she clung to her strong faith in Christ. Her gentle and knowing smile was always a delight to behold. The level of dedication and discipline she displayed in many aspects of her life is truly inspirational.
She was born and raised in Dunkerton, Iowa. Along with the love of her life, Leroy, she lived in several areas of Iowa and Minnesota throughout her life. She spent many years working hard in multiple capacities. Her skills were varied and plentiful as she: grew up farming, worked with machinery, helped fix cars, went to nursing school, raised children, worked with troubled youth, and worked in shipping at Acrylic Fabricators, among many other things. She was also a fervent and sacrificial caretaker for Leroy during the health challenges he faced, particularly at the end of his life.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leroy Scherbing, son William "Billy" Scherbing, and grandsons Daniel (Dan) and Andrew (Andy) Scherbing. Her parents, Thomas Cunningham and Porte Dawes, as well as her siblings Catherine Simons, Dorothea Burke, Mary Ann Schons, James Cunningham, and Joe Cunningham, have also preceded her in passing.
Margaret is survived by her loving children, Edward (Ed) Jessen, Dennis Scherbing, Gerald (Jerry) Scherbing, Raymond (Ray) Scherbing, and Robert (Bob) Scherbing. Her legacy will continue to thrive through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Margaret's favorite moments with family and friends were spent playing games like 500 and Bingo, and she also enjoyed fishing and sightseeing. She loved spending time with her family over meals, which almost always included mashed potatoes and coffee. A devout Christian, she found solace in reading the Bible and making many three-ring binders of Bible notes.
Margaret's lasting memories were created alongside those she loved and in her many travels. She leaves behind a legacy of strong Christian faith, generosity, and the love she poured into those in her life.
A memorial service to celebrate Margaret's life will be held on September 9th, 2023, at 11am at the Hope Christian Church in Shoreview, MN. We invite all those who were touched by Margaret's life to join us in celebrating her remarkable journey. Refreshments will be provided following the service.
There will not be a burial in the upcoming service. To honor Margaret's wishes, upon her death her body was donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest program. Within 18 months, her ashes will be returned to the family and the final resting place will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery next to Leroy.
