Margaret's obituary
We regretfully announce the peaceful passing of Margaret F McNamee on March 3, 2024. Born on September 20, 1947, to Ruth and Donald Freeman in Bath, Maine.
Margaret especially cherished her childhood summers spent as a family at Sabino. As an adult she continued to look forward to her time spent at the Point reading books, kayaking and breathing in the salt air.
Having an insatiable appetite for learning, Margaret graduated from Morse High School at the top of her class. She studied English at Colby College and later went on to earn her MS in Library Science through the University of South Carolina. She loved to be surrounded by books. She worked in public libraries, a law library and school libraries. She retired as the high school librarian in the Biddeford Public Schools.
Another important aspect of Margaret’s life was her faith. Her longtime involvement in the Alfred Parish church community was really important to her. She served as a Deaconess and those that knew her were always grateful for her helpful and loving support.
Perhaps Margaret’s favorite role in life was being a devoted grandmother to 4 grandsons on two different coasts. Despite the distance, Amy and Karen both had their mother’s support through each birth. She was there when each baby boy came home from the hospital. She would eagerly take each sweet little early morning riser and quietly rock them back to sleep. Mom and dad were always grateful for the extra sleep that gramma gifted them! She enjoyed family trips to the beach and the mountains in California, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Mexico, the Bahamas and Aruba. Gramma was always up for building a fort, playing a game or going on a new adventure and before the end of each visit, she made sure to organize every bookshelf!
When she received the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, she made the difficult decision to move to a home in Plymouth MA where she could be closer to family and friends. Everyone she came in contact with noticed her sweet and loving disposition. Even when she could no longer speak with her words, she communicated by smiling and laughing. People felt her love in her eyes.
Margaret will forever be cherished as a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and teacher. Though we are devastated by this loss, we are comforted by the fact that she believed fully in God and is now at peace in heaven. She is survived by her brother Chet Freeman, sister Virginia Freeman, daughters, Amy Cote and Karen Hurtado and four grandsons Zachary and Nicholas Cote, Mateo and Luca Hurtado.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
