Margaret's obituary

If flowers grow in heaven, Lord,
would you pick some... fragrant and lovely?
Then lay them in my mother’s arms,
and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her that I love and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
please place a kiss upon her cheek,
and hold her for awhile.

We are extremely saddened to announce the death of our family’s matriarch, Mrs. Margaret Jeanetta Marder (née Montgomery) on Friday, February 8th, 2019 at the Sunnybrook Veterans’ Residence on Bayview Avenue, in Toronto, Ontario.

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, Margaret has gone now to join her husband (Sydney Marder), her daughter (Tanya Marder), her grandson (Kol Marder) and granddaughter (Maria Linda Evans), and her brothers (Wallace and Jimmy Montgomery), in the sweet hereafter.

Margaret is survived by her sisters (Elsie Gallant and Mary Desserud), by her children (Linda Lucas, and Maureen, Bonnie, and David Marder), and by her grandchildren (Peter Stokes, Joseph Evans,
Stephen Evans, Perl Marder, and Ian Marder), as well as her great-grandchildren (Nicola, Sydney, Niko, Xavier Smith, Trey, and Jayd), and great-great grandchildren (Xavier Stokes, and Brooklyn).

Known as a devoted Christian to her many church friends, companions, and acquaintances at the Grace New Covenant Church in Toronto where she was a member for almost 40 years, Margaret was a deeply spiritual woman with a profound love for the fellowship of her church and its members. She was greatly comforted by visits from her dear and faithful church friends and pastor in the years, months, weeks, and days before she passed. These same people offered tremendous comfort and support to us in our grief too, and we are exceedingly grateful for their kindness, their time, and their gracious generosity.

Margaret's other fondest activities were: reading, music (especially hymns and the bagpipes, like any good Scotswoman), a rousing game of Scrabble (notorious among other players as the 'Scrabble Police'), and her family -- but not necessarily in that order. She enjoyed relating stories of her childhood in the wilds of a northern backwoods village in the Maritimes, and her fine sense of humour and wry wit was always engaging, keeping her family, friends, and Sunnybrook nurses and staff constantly smiling.

Our profound gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Sunnybrook Veterans' Centre for the excellent care Margaret received over the past few years -- the nurses and therapists in particular -- who demonstrated the most professional, patient compassion and competence towards our mother/grandmother, and went far beyond the call of duty to extend their gentle care to us also, throughout the years of her residency and in our eventual grief. Margaret was happy and content in the safe, stimulating, and comfortable environment created by these amazing caregivers at her Sunnybrook home, and we were always confident that she was being cared for with great kindness and respect. We will never forget all you wonderful people. Thank you for everything.

Margaret/mom/grandmama... you said you wanted to “go for the record” and you succeeded by reaching your 97th birthday. We will dearly miss your playful and affectionate nature very much, but you will be alive and well in our hearts and memories forever.
Until we meet again.
