Margaret's obituary

Margaret “Peg” Mankowich (Prue), 72, of Hoover, Alabama was called to Heaven on April 24, 2020 after a fierce but short fight with an aggressive form of bladder cancer.

Peggy was born November 10, 1947 in New London, Connecticut, the daughter of Peg and Armand Prue. She was raised in Cheshire, Connecticut with her brothers Donald, Tim and Tom and attended Cheshire High School. She received her BA from the University of Connecticut in 1969 and went on to get her Masters in English from the University of Southern Connecticut. Upon graduation, she taught English and History in New Haven schools, and that is where she met her future husband, John.

John and Peg married in Cheshire, Connecticut on August 7, 1971. From there they moved to Medford, New Jersey where they started a family. John’s job moved the family all over the United States, and throughout Peg was always supportive and by the family’s side, however, always missing her beloved New England. Her passion for teaching led her to various positions in schools across New Jersey, California, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Chicago and Alabama. One of her greatest joys was teaching at Sylvan Learning Systems and she was proud to take home the Director of Education of the Year award for Sylvan in 2008. She had a heart for service and spent hours volunteering at the Clothes Closet and the Hoover Service Club, was a proud member of the Hoover chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and taught English classes at Lawson State up until last fall.

Peg was a dedicated Mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. She especially loved her role as Grammie to John Thomas and James Andrew. She had a strong and discerning personality, knew exactly who she was and what she stood for and wasn’t shy about letting people know. She was smart, she was kind and she had a huge heart for her students. She was a premier educator and had incredible credibility and respect with educators and students alike.

She embodied values which today appear so out of fashion - steadfast decency, patience, compassion, honesty, absolute selflessness, complete disinterest in ego and materialism and resolve in the face of challenge to protect family, without praise or gratitude. She had an acceptance of everyone and a compass that always pointed in the direction of what was fair and kind and just.

Anyone that knew Peg, knew her passion for history, reading, traveling and her life-long love of learning. She would be your “phone a friend” on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” and your best bet for a trivial pursuit partner. She was a phenomenal cook, enjoyed playing Bunco and going to the theater with her girlfriends, browsing for antiques, loved a white clam pizza from Pepe’s in New Haven and savored stopping along the New England coast for whole clams with her family. Mostly she enjoyed sitting and enjoying endless hours of conversation and debate with her friends and family over a (very) good bottle of Chardonnay.

Peg was welcomed at the gates of heaven by beloved parents, Armand and Dolly Prue, cherished brother Donald Michael, grandparents James and Anna Fox Costello and Armand C. and Eugenie H.Prue and father and mother-in-law, Ivan and Leona Mankowich.

She leaves behind her beloved husband and best friend of 48 years, John Mankowich of Hoover, Alabama; a daughter Kristen Muckleroy and her husband Slade of Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, a son Jim Mankowich and his wife Constance, and their boys, her cherished grandsons John and Drew, of Hoover, Alabama, her brothers, Tim Prue of Hamden, Connecticut and Tom Prue and his wife Lynn of Cheshire, Connecticut, brother and sister-in-laws, Jim and Sandra Mankowich of Dallas, Texas, and Brant and Ivana Basnight of Virginia Beach, VA, her next-door neighbors and closest friends Cheryl and Mike Bailey, as well as a multitude of extended family and friends who love her dearly.

You have earned your eternal rest, your work on earth done. Now it is our turn to try and be worthy of your legacy by following your example. To be decent people, to care for family and think of others first.

In honor of Peg’s memory, the family asks that you enjoy a toast to her memory (preferably with Chardonnay). In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in her memory be made to the charity of your choice.

At this time there are no immediate plans to gather and celebrate Peg’s life. When able, her family will announce dates to celebrate her in both Hoover, AL at St Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and at a location to be determined in Cheshire, CT.

We love you Peg. Mom. Wife. Sister. Cousin. Aunt. Friend. We will miss you terribly until we meet again.

In loving memory.
