Margaret Jane's obituary
Margaret Jane Cook “Cookie” Johnson, age 93, passed away peacefully at her assisted living residence the morning of June 3, 2023. She was born September 27, 1929 to Torrence and Alvalee (McDonie) Cook in Lundale, WV.
She is survived by her son, Todd (Sheri) Johnson of Gallipolis; daughters Jane (John) Miller and Ann (Ronald Helber) Johnson, both of Columbus; five grandchildren, Kevan (Kayla) Johnson of Anderson, SC, Ryan Johnson of Gallipolis, Patrick Miller, Eric Miller, and Jennifer (William) Garner, all of Columbus. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, whom she adored, with a third on the way.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip Cook, of Beckley, WV, and her former spouse, Billy Joe Johnson, of Gallipolis.
Margaret was a proud graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buchanan, WV, and of the Physical Therapy Program at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, MN.
She began her PT career in Huntington, WV, sharing time between St. Mary’s and Cabell Huntington hospitals, and later joining Holzer Hospital in Gallipolis as its very first on-staff physical therapist. She served Holzer Medical Center in that capacity for many years, eventually elevating to Director of the Physical Therapy Department. Before her full retirement, Margaret also provided therapy services for children in the Dawson-Bryant School District. She considered it her honor to provide care and treatment to her many patients over her years as a PT, and made many cherished life-long friends in the process.
In keeping with her dedication to medical science, Margaret made the choice several years ago to donate her body to The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She rests there now, ready to make her continuing contribution to medical education.
Second in her heart only to her career, Margaret had a life-long love affair with books. She spent the majority of her free time reading, and had accumulated an impressive personal library. Our local public library was her favorite place to wile away some time. Anyone wishing to make a gift in Margaret’s memory may do so to:
