Margaret L. Jennings lived a remarkable life from February 14, 1936, to February 13, 2025, just a day shy of her 89th birthday. Her journey through nearly nine decades was marked by resilience, kindness, and an enduring commitment to those she loved. Born in the mid-1930s, she witnessed and adapted to an ever-changing world, from the post-war era through the digital age. Margaret’s legacy is not only in the family she cherished but also in the countless lives she touched with her generosity and karisma. Her life is celebrated by those who knew her, as they remember her warmth, humor, and unwavering spirit.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, to Millie Ann Stewart and Henry Stewart. After the passing of Margaret’s biological father, Henry, Mille Ann united with General Campbell who played a vital role in raising Margaret. Margaret was raised with strong values of faith and perseverance. After residing in Memphis , Tennessee in her younger years, she moved to California, where she built a life filled with love, purpose, and family. She made history as a hostess at Marine Land at a time when Black women were not given such opportunities, later working as a waitress and cook at Randy’s in Downtown Los Angeles for Randy Elder. She also worked at the Getty Museum before retiring as a supervisor at Flagship. Additionally, with great pride, she acquired her Bailbonds License where she utilized in her managerial role and leadership at JennFord Bails Bonds (later knows as T.Jennings. ) for over 30 years.
In 2019, Margaret faced a profound loss with the passing of her beloved husband, John D. Jennings. This tested her strength, but she found the courage to continue living fully, honoring his memory while embracing the joys of life. After his passing, she spent her time in the loving care of her two daughters, Denise Washington and Margaret Jennings Culbreath, who ensured her final years were filled with love, comfort, and dignity. Even in her later years, Margaret remained active, continuing to travel making trips to Houston, Texas, and never “missing a beat”.
Margaret was a devoted mother, preceded in death by her children Laverne Harvey, Michael Jennings, and Johnny D. Williams (Stuff). She is survived by her loving children: Jerome Williams (Cleveland, OH), Denise Washington (Anthony) of Rancho, Cathy English of Los Angeles, CA, Teresa Jennings of California/Arizona, Montoya Jennings, and Margaret M. Jennings Culbreath (Anthony) of Compton, CA.
A nurturing grandmother, Margaret played a significant role in raising Tremaine Williams and Brittany Grate Gaines, ensuring they had the love and support to pursue higher education. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Uriel Williams, LaStan Walker, Tony Walker, Tremaine Williams, Nathaniel Jackson, Austin Williams, Sheldon Williams, Erica Washington Carter, Brittany Grate Gaines, Ryan Washington, David English, and Aniesha Culbreath Baker. She is also survived by a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Johnnie B. Stewart Sr (Mildred), her nephew Johnny “Tuk” Stewart and her niece, Mildred Ann Stewart Colyar, but is survived by her loving niece Loretha Stewart Stone and a surviving uncle, Otha Wade.
Margaret found joy in cooking for her family, needlepointing and quilting, shopping, and always looking nice. She also pledged with the Eastern Star and served as a Worthy Matron. Above all, she was deeply devoted to her faith, serving faithfully at Christian Unity Baptist Church and Avalon Church of Christ throughout her life.
Her strength, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and community will forever be remembered. Though she has left this earthly home, her legacy of love, faith, and perseverance will continue to live on in all who had the honor of knowing her.
