Margaret's obituary

Margaret "Marge" Mary Doherty-Vollmer, passed away peacefully in her home on October 1, 2023. Born to John and Katherine Doherty of Manhattan, she was a first generation American of Irish decent. Marge grew up in Manhattan and attended School of the Blessed Sacrament as a child. After graduation, she started her family and would go on to have 5 children over the next 15 years who she raised in Queens. During this time she worked for the National Coffee Association and then moved into the tech world working on some of the earliest consumer computers on the market. She was very proud of this work and of her knowledge of the cutting edge technology for that day, as well as her impressively fast typing skills, at nearly 135 words per minute. In 1993, she moved her family 200 miles north from Queens to Castle Creek, New York. This change was a culture shock for the family but Marge made the best of the move by attending Broome Community College where she graduated with an Associates degree and would later work as a member of the faculty. Marge went on to study at Binghamton University where she received a Bachelors Degree in Applied Social Science and two Masters Degrees in Social Science and Social Work. Marge was passionate about helping those in need and supporting people during difficult times in their life. Marge was fiercely independent with a witty and sarcastic humor to match. She was a friend to all who met her and her love for her family and friends will always be remembered and cherished.

Marge was predeceased by her first husband Edward Quinn, her second husband Robert Vollmer, her father and mother John and Katherine Doherty, brother Tommy Doherty who passed as an infant, sister Theresa (Kenneth) Wales, her brother in law Richard (Kathleen) Vollmer, her son in law James (Deirdre) Florance Sr., and her great granddaughter Maisie Jean Florance who left us all too soon. Marge leaves behind her best friend and beloved cat of the past 14 years, George, her 5 children; Conn (Jason Enslin) Quinn, Cormac (Anne) Quinn, Deirdre Florance, Christine (Darren Antalek) Vollmer, Veronica (Ian) Ballard, her 7 grandchildren; Amanda (Zachary Baker) VanGordon, James (Cassie) Florance Jr., Joshua (Marilyn Drooney) VanGordon, Selena VanGordon, Kimberly Florance, Rebecca Todd, James Ballard, and her great grandson; Henry Florance who she absolutely adored and was the apple of her eye. Marge also leaves behind several cousins, nieces and nephews, other extended family, and many, many friends who she loved dearly both in the United States and in Ireland. She was and always will be known as "Nana" to all that loved her.

The family will be holding a memorial service for Marge sometime in the coming weeks, the details of which have not yet been confirmed. More information will be provided at a later date.
