Mattie's obituary
Margaret Ann "Mattie" Chiasson (née Thompson), also known as Mat Foster to many in Cincinnati, passed away peacefully at her home in New Port Richey, Florida, on September 1, 2024. Born on the front steps of Davis Hospital in Elkins, West Virginia, on October 6, 1948, Mattie lived a life filled with resilience, creativity, and devotion.
She was the cherished daughter of Margie and Eddie Thompson and grew up in Elkins, where she graduated from Elkins High School. Mattie went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, attending Azusa Pacific University and the Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary. Her early career saw her teaching second grade in Newport, Kentucky, for two years before she pursued her passion for film and television. She furthered her studies in motion picture production at Penn State through an American Film Institute program, which launched her into a vibrant career. Mattie's work included contributions to several episodes of the nationally syndicated "After School Specials" and local Cincinnati television shows. Later, she applied her creative talents at Seta, Appleman & Showell Inc., where she worked on graphic design for television commercials, particularly for Procter & Gamble products.
Mattie was a joy to be reckoned with, always the hostess of great parties and events, always up for adventures and she had a zest for meeting others. To some, she was almost the Auntie Mame film character.
In 1996, Mattie faced a formidable challenge when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy, she demonstrated extraordinary strength and lived for another 28 years, which her loved ones consider nothing short of a miracle. In 2007, Mattie married Robert "Bob" Chiasson, a civilian employee of the Navy living in Washington, D.C. She retired and they split their time between homes in Seneca Rocks, West Virginia, and Washington, DC. In 2014, after Bob's retirement, the couple relocated to New Port Richey, Florida, while continuing to spend summers in Seneca Rocks and enjoying visits to her son’s family in Cincinnati.
Mattie was a devout Christian and an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in New Port Richey. She also attended High Rock Church in Mackville, West Virginia. Her faith was central to her life and was a source of comfort throughout her health challenges. She was very proud of her heritage and belonged to a Washington, D.C. chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mattie is survived by her beloved husband, Robert Chiasson; her son, Daric Foster, and his wife Stephanie; and her two adored granddaughters, Sophia and Chloe Foster. A service is being planned in Cincinnati on her birthday on Sunday October 6, at 3:00 PM Miami Boat Club 6071 Second St, Loveland, OH 45140.
