Peg's obituary
Margaret L. Camburn passed away suddenly on October 13, 2023 after an unexpectedly difficult battle with Covid. Peg was born on September 25, 1945 in a Philadelphia rowhome, the daughter of Herman J. & Sadie H. Skea, sister of Doris, June, and Herman, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and beloved husband of 53 years, Raymond.
She is survived by her devoted yet frustrating daughter, Debi, the son-in-law she’d hoped for, Jim, her best friend and closest confidant, her niece Peggy, and numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved and enjoyed spending time with whenever they could.
Peg graduated from Jules E. Mastbaum High School in 1963 where she met her best friend, Marci Peters. Peg and Marci were fast friends from the start. Peg was a shy teen, and Marci being the more outgoing, adventurous of the two, encouraged Peg to come out of her shell. They enjoyed day trips to the New Jersey beachfront, playing cards with mutual friends, and raising their subsequent children together.
Peg went to work for Spiegel’s Department store after high school and she aspired to become a secretary, despite a love-hate relationship with typewriters. Her world changed at age 20 when she and Marci went out one evening to the Polish American Club. They met a young man named Ray from the suburbs, fresh home from the United States Navy. She recalled he was quite the piano player and she and Marci started spending time together with Ray and his best friend and bandmate, Bob Petrucci. Ray and Peg began dating in November,1965, and the connection was immediate, marrying the following Summer.
Peg had a penchant for Dachshunds, and the happy couple became pet parents to Pete the canary in 1966, Fritz the Dachshund in 1967 followed by his brother Toby in 1968, before welcoming their first and only human child, Debra in January 1970. They bought their first home in 1973 from Peg’s brother and sister-in-law, Herman & Gail Skea, where they enjoyed hosting small family holiday gatherings, birthday celebrations and occasional dinners.
Mom was a simple woman who enjoyed occasional walks home from Debi’s ballet class together, where they discovered their mutual love of honeysuckle, growing award-worthy rose bushes (one season contained 23 in a small Mayfair backyard garden!) listening to Johnny Mathis, Karen Carpenter and her husband’s piano stylings and maintaining a well-appointed home for her family and friends. Her favorite pastime by far was shopping and dining out, despite being a less-than-adventurous eater who never really strayed from meat and potatoes. She enjoyed her later years spending time on the deck with Ray, visits with Debi and Jim, picking a more than energetic puppy named Bridget to fill the void after losing Ray in 2019. Peg was loved by many people and will be dearly missed by those who loved her most.
Family & friends are invited to the graveside service where she will be interred with her husband Ray at Washington Crossing National Cemetery on Wednesday, October 25TH at 10:15am (830 Highland Rd., in Newtown, PA). A Celebration of Life luncheon will follow.
