Marcella's obituary

Marcella deCaires (Andrea Marcella Gance) passed away peacefully on March 29th, 2020 at the age of 65. Born April 7th, 1954 to Dolores deCaires (nee Rodrigues) and Anthony deCaires in Georgetown, Guyana. Marcella was cremated on Wednesday, April 1st, 2020 in Montclair, New Jersey USA. Marcella emigrated to the United States in the early seventies and lived in Florida and Las Vegas before settling in Montclair, NJ in the early nineties. She is survived by her most beloved nieces - Emma deCaires, Bonu deCaires, Maya Lake, and Samantha Gann; nephews- Jahi Lake and Damian deCaires, and great- nephews Seraj deCaires and James Gann; sister Marion deCaires Lake, brothers Salvador deCaires, Lawrence deCaires and Jonathan Orenstein. Marcella grew up in Georgetown, Guyana and was well remembered by friends from her youth as being a person of great fun, and humour. She whipped around GT on her motorbike and was a wild and memorable young woman with a fiery personality. Marcella loved an underdog, hated a bully and was forgiving of weakness and faults. She was a completely unique person, and fiercely loyal, especially when it came to her nieces and nephews. She was like a second mother (albeit a totally indulgent one) to Maya and Seraj and spent countless hours driving them to all of their activities. The accomplishments of her nieces and nephews gave her huge joy and every newspaper clipping and award announcement was saved. Marcella worked at the exquisite “Dem Two Hands” shop in Montclair with her sister Marion, who owned it. She had many favourite customers and made their experience of shopping high energy and full of fun. Marcella was an entertaining storyteller and was guaranteed to pick up on all the humourous characteristics and personalities of anyone in the vicinity - from the doctor taking care of her to the busboy at a restaurant. She was quick-witted and never missed an opportunity to have us all in stitches with her observations. She loved Guyana and pored over the local newspapers on a regular basis, keeping quite up to date with local events. Her trips to Guyana were the highlights of her last decade and she especially loved reconnecting with long-time family friend Shirley Ramotar Phillips and her cousin Roxanne Lorimer. Marcella will be profoundly missed by all who loved her.
