Marc's obituary
Marc Thorndal, 35, of Portland, OR passed away on November 4, 2024 after fighting acute liver failure.
Marc was born July 13, 1989 in Columbus, OH to parents Herbert Louis Thorndal III and Georgina Soledad (Montoya) Thorndal. Marc graduated from Dublin Scioto High School as part of the Class of 2007. After graduating, Marc attended The Ohio State University before moving to Portland, OR in the spring of 2012.
While in Portland, Marc worked at various local establishments–including The Lucky Horseshoe Lounge, Old Town Brewing, and Checkered Flag Tavern II, among others–as a bartender, cook, delivery driver and salesman. He also acted as a campaign field coordinator in the states of Oregon, California and Washington. In his experience, Marc went on to make numerous connections that stayed with him through friendship, patronage and beyond.
In June 2018, Marc began seeing Jenna Hilgeman, having met while bartending. Jenna moved to San Diego just three weeks later, but their affection for each other only grew through the long distance. The couple followed their instincts, moving in together in Portland the following year and spending his remaining years as best friends and life partners.
Marc was a dynamic spirit, always able to find a connection with those around him. He pursued joy in relationships and memories–consistently seeking to elevate an experience to be one worth remembering–often leaving his own impression on those around to witness his humor and passion.
In his free time, Marc made himself known in the community as a prominent figure at local institutions and events. He also found peace in cooking, pursuing unique flavors and exciting experiments; camping and fishing with anyone willing to join him; collecting clothes, hats, decor and tattoos that defined his self-expression; attending metal shows and other concerts, pleased to promote the artists that made an impact on him; and watching and listening to Trailblazers games whenever and wherever he could.
Marc Thorndal is survived by his life partner Jenna Hilgeman; his parents Herbert III and Georgina; and his siblings Herbert Thorndal IV and Kathleen Veccia-Thorndal.
Marc’s family will be publicly honoring him in early 2025. Details will be shared, but please reach out to marcthorndalmemorial@gmail.com to be notified of future information regarding the memorial service.
