Manuel Marks Souza, Jr., affectionately known as “Jr. (Junior)” or “J.R.” to his family and friends, passed away on January 12, 2024, in his hometown of Merced, California. He was born on July 11, 1950, to Manuel and Dolores Marks Souza, Sr. in Merced, California.

Manuel Jr. was the third of four children born to Manuel and Dolores, with two older brothers, Richard and Harold, and one younger sister, Jeannette. He was raised on his family’s dairy farm and attended schools in the Merced area. He did a variety of work throughout his life, and in more recent years, was a truck driver.

Manuel Jr. was a very independent and private man, yet, he was also outgoing and witty with a sarcastic and playful sense of humor. He loved traveling, seeing new places and making friends along the way, all across the United States. Some of his favorite things were eating seafood, a good piece of pie and a cup of coffee, and spice drop candies. He loved to fish, play cards, collect items from estate and yard sales, and spend time with family and friends. He is greatly missed, and he leaves behind many memories with those who loved him.

Manuel Jr. was predeceased in death by his parents, his oldest son, Shane Marks Souza, and his brother, Harold Marks Souza. Manuel Jr.'s memory is honored and kept alive by his loving son, Zebulon (Amber) Souza; his grandchildren, Zebulon Jr. and Hailey; his brother, Richard (Barbara); his sister, Jeannette (John); and a multitude of nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues.

A celebration of life will be held June 1st.
