Mads (Madeline)'s obituary

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Mads (Madeline) DeShazo, 33, of Milton, Massachusetts who left us on January 25, 2023 as the result of a tragic accident. She is survived by her mother, Jake Karger and sister, Molly DeShazo. Her father, John DeShazo, passed away in 2011.

Mads loved nature, her friends, singing, and helping others in every way possible. She was an inspiring community organizer and activist, who worked for groups dedicated to racial justice and prison abolition, among others. She participated in community farming and was active in local food justice efforts. Mads was a leader in Seattle’s Jewish community, teaching songs, facilitating art, and supporting people in their grief, healing, ritual, and connection.

After living in Seattle for eight years, she had returned to Boston and enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University School of Theology with the aim of becoming a chaplain.

We will miss her terribly.

A memorial service will take place in March with the location and date to be determined. All event details will be listed on this website under "Events" as they become finalized.
