Patty's obituary
Madeline Patricia Welker, lovingly known as Patty, Mom, Grammie, and a dear friend to many, was a beloved mother, loving wife, grandmother, sister, and devoted teacher. She passed away on January 26, 2026, in Columbia, Missouri, at the age of 76. Born on September 5, 1949, in Gary, Indiana, Patty was the cherished daughter of Bill and Kay Guiney. She was preceded in death by her first-born son, Joshua Welker, and her eldest sister, Mary Ann M. Guiney.
Patty’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith in Jesus and profound love for her family. She was blessed with a devoted husband, Jon Welker, and together they nurtured a vibrant family. Their union was blessed with five children: Joshua Welker who is deceased, Jon and his wife Jennie, Luke and his wife Heather, Timothy and his wife Christine, and their daughter Kara Welker. Madeline found immeasurable joy in her ten grandchildren: Katrina, Erik, Ethan, Evan, Stephen, Mikayla, Isaiah, Aliyah, Charlotte, and Ruth. Each grandchild was a light in her life, deeply loved, prayed over, and celebrated in countless ways. Through them, she leaves an enduring legacy of kindness, faith, and devotion.
Patty was a passionate educator, having attended San Diego State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in History, and served as a teacher’s assistant. Her career as a schoolteacher was more than a profession; it was her calling. She brought the word of the Lord into her classroom, imparting not just academic knowledge but also truth, and kindness. Her students were not just recipients of information; they were touched by her warmth and wisdom, as she instilled in them a sense of purpose and integrity.
Her love for God was evident in every aspect of her life. As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Patty radiated love and joy. Her laughter and gentle humor filled every room, making even the simplest moments; like shopping or spending time with her grandchildren-moments of happiness and connection. Even in her later years, she continued to embrace new joys—from watching Korean television with her sisters to exploring new hobbies. Patty also had a lifelong love for drawing and painting, and she often shared her creativity by gifting her artwork to her children and grandchildren, each piece given with love and intention. She delighted in learning how to navigate Snapchat so she could stay connected through daily group chats with her daughters-in-law and granddaughters, sharing her love, wisdom, and humor each day. Her curiosity, adaptability, and joyful spirit reflected a lifelong willingness to embrace life’s surprises.
Patty’s legacy is a beautiful reflection of the faith, love, and service she dedicated to God, family, and community. She lived her life rooted in faith, guiding those she loved with prayer, wisdom, and unwavering devotion. Her presence was a source of strength, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Patty is survived by her husband and siblings: Jon Welker, Kathleen Guiney and Terry Guiney, who shared in her laughter and life’s journey. Her family will always remember her as a shining light that guided them through life’s challenges with grace and love.
