Mabel's obituary

Mabel Onome Egbenoma affectionately known to many as 'Mabes', 42, of Austin, Texas sadly passed away on 11th January 2024 unexpected by her family and friends.  She is leaving behind a world that was infinitely brighter for her presence, and she will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Mabel was born on 13th August 1981 in Kano, Nigeria.  She was a burst of joy in the lives of her parents, Sarah and Anthony Egbenoma, and her sister Emily.

Having moved to London, Mabel became a proud Londoner.  Her early life in South Chelsea was a mixtape of music, theatre, games, and movies—essentially any form of entertainment that didn't involve a dull moment. She was the life and soul of every party and the person you would find in the middle of a dance floor, likely wearing her signature big hoop earrings, platform shoes, and sunglasses at night because...why not?

Black was her colour, not because she was dark and brooding, but because she loved the challenge of making something so simple look so darn good.

After graduating from Burntwood Secondary School in 1997, Mabel attended Carshalton College where she studied Business followed by the University of East London where she studied Forensic Science inspired by the TV series CSI. Mabel was as brilliant as she was vivacious.

Mabel worked at various companies where she made many friends and developed a variety of skills in order to become extremely skilled and successful in the world of finance and accounting.

She was a highly intelligent, friendly, kind and thoughtful individual that was notorious for her contagious laugh and bright sunny smile.  Mabel spread light and sunshine wherever she went.

Mabel enjoyed travel and visited countries such as Bali, Portugal, Jamaica, Egypt, Austria, Belgium  and China to mention but a few places, and she had a keen sense of adventure either jumping from a plane or walking the Great Wall of China.

Mabel was a creative and always thought outside of the box. Life with Mabel was never dull and she always found the most randomly amazing social activities and experiences to engage in.

Her baby, Hogan, a creature of fur and sass, was possibly the only being capable of stealing the spotlight from Mabel. Hogan was her sidekick, her confidant, and her reluctant audience to impromptu performances in the living room. Mabel's love for Hogan was as deep as her passion for platform shoes—and that's saying something! He will miss her as much as the rest of us.

Mabel was selfless, full of compassion and empathy dedicating time towards volunteering at The Bowery Mission, organising food and supporting homeless people in New York.

Mabel's kind heart wasn't just for show. She was the friend who would be there at a moment's notice, no matter the time or place.  She loved to spend time with her friends and family near and far, despite the distance she could be found talking on the phone or video call to keep in touch with everyone.

She would often entertain younger members building close and loving relationships with the children of her honorary sisters.  Mabel, affectionately known as Auntie Mabel to many always had time to listen to their stories and show up to events turning heads and looking glamorous.

The world has lost a bright light in Mabel. She has left the building, but her smile echoes in the memories of those who knew her. She lived life with grace, a big smile, and an outpouring of kindness, and while the curtain has closed on her time with us, the encore of her influence will persist in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were lucky enough to encounter her infectious joy.

So, let's not say goodbye to Mabel. Instead, let's take a page out of her book and accessorise our own lives with a little more laughter, a little more kindness, and maybe a pair of big hoop earrings—because as Mabel showed us, life isn't just about the time you're given, but the flair with which you live it.

Her family and friends will miss her more than words can say.

There will be a funeral service held at Midday 27th January 2024 at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, TX, 78745.
