L.W. Stephens III, known as Bill to family and friends, passed away on February 14, 2023 in Oviedo, FL. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Julia Davis Stephens of Oviedo, FL; 4 children - Vera Stephens Yancey of SC, L.W. “Luke” Stephens IV of Raleigh, NC, Kathleen Stephens Champlin of Oviedo, FL, and Elwayne Dean Stephens of Bozeman, MT; 10 grandchildren- Andrew Yancey, Eric Yancey, Hunter Stephens, Dakota Stephens, Garrett Stephens, Bethany Champlin, Win Champlin, Colter Stephens, Cooper Stephens, Stella Stephens.; 4 siblings- Janie Rozier of Oxford, MS, Eugene Stephens of Dallas, TX, Nancy Stephens of Dallas, TX, and Sue Kohanski of Nashville, TN..
Bill was born in Arcola, MS in 1935 to Jane McDonough Stephens and L.W “Wildcat” Stephens Jr. Following high school graduation, He attended Central Washington University in Ellensburg, WA and ultimately graduated from Mississippi College in 1957. After being set up on a blind date, he married his life love, Julia Davis in 1959. He joined the army and was sent to the wilds of Alaska. Following his honorable discharge, he sampled careers in social work and education, but ultimately found his niche with Sears until his retirement in 1992.
Bill was an enthusiastic Mississippi State football fan, runner, gardener, and handyman. Known far and wide for hosting excellent monster huntings, rock skipping, and bonfires one of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. A man of deep devotion, he has served his local Baptist church as s deacon and Gideon. His greatest accomplishment is the legacy of love for God, his family, and his country.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am on March 18, 2023 at Cross Life Church, 45 W Broadway St, Oviedo, FL 32765. A reception will be held from 1:00 pm- 4:00 pm at the Live Oak Clubhouse, 1901 Live Oak Reserve Blvd Oviedo FL 32766
