Luther Woodrum was extraordinary for his intellect, creativity, and speed. A favorite Luther memory was was the time when he was approached by another programmer who explained a complex problem and asked Luther for an idea to explore, a paper to read, an algorithm which might be applicable. Luther listened carefully, tamped a cigarette on his wristwatch crystal, cackled his distinctive laugh, picked up a piece of chalk and wrote the entire APL program with the same ease as I could write my name and address. Wrote it, and it worked on the second try!

I have fond memories of Luther in our old motorcycle days..He forever on his cherished BMW..In particular I remember his unique humor and positive thoughts..A few of us went riding one weekend morning..all but Luther were on motorcycles designed for wood riding..we were off road on depot hill and there was an almost impossible climb..somehow in all our amazement ,Luther took his BMW where I can assure a BMW has never gone before..this was about 60 years ago and I was right behind him watching him to something that just shocked us all..he was really a one in a million..my heartfelt thoughts to his family..Gary feldman North Carolina

I am very sorry for the loss of Luther and my sincere condolences go to the entire family.  He was an extremely interesting and intelligent person who made significant contributions throughout his life and was appreciated by many.  May he rest in eternal peace and may fond memories bring comfort and peace to his family and friends.
