Lurline's obituary

Lurline Agatha DaCosta, 83, of Loganville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2023, in her home after a long battle with Alzheimer's in the presence of her loving husband, Derrick. Born in Coleyville, Jamaica, in 1939, Lurline spent her childhood and early adult life in Jamaica and immigrated to New Jersey in 1977. She worked as a housekeeper during the day and as a nurse's aide in the evenings in order to bring her six children to the US. She was driven and determined to provide educational opportunities for her children that she did not have. In addition to working several jobs and taking care of her home and family, Lurline also had a creative side. A self-taught seamstress, Lurline was always the best dressed at any formal function and blessed many radiant brides with beautifully custom-designed wedding dresses. Her artistry also blossomed through her interaction with nature. Lurline loved to garden. She surrounded her and her children's homes with vibrant, lush, flower-filled yards. She was a devoted and proud grandmother, making all her grandchildren feel special.  An amazing cook, her cooking brought joy to large family holiday gatherings at her home, church banquets, and weddings–her curry chicken, rice and peas, potato salad, and ambrosia being particular crowd favorites.

A devout Christian, Lurline rose early every morning to worship and spend time with the Lord, quietly reading her well-worn bible. She was a prayer warrior, fervently interceding and seeking God on behalf of her family and wide circle of friends. Always at church on Sundays, she would testify, exhort and often perform solos. One of her favorite songs was "He Looked Beyond My Faults," a hymn about how God looks past our imperfections and provides for our needs. Lurline lived by this message, lovingly opening her home to many in need. From boarding students attending Holmwood Technical High School and Sacred Heart Academy in Jamaica, to foster babies born to drug-addicted mothers in New Jersey, she looked after them all. Lurline was “mama” to many and caregiving was in her nature.

Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of everyone who knew her, but her memory will live on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and extended family.  We miss her dearly, yet we know she is soaring in heaven with the angels and singing to her Heavenly Father.

Lurline is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Derrick Hugh DaCosta, her six children, Everton DaCosta of Loganville, Georgia, Barbara Richardson of Atlanta, Georgia, Christopher DaCosta of Macungie, Pennsylvania, Derrick D. Dacosta of Slough House, California, Rosemarie Anderson of Marietta, Georgia and Michelle Bonta of Portland, Oregon, and nephew Richard DaCosta of Alford, Massachusetts. She had twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings Gleaster Powell, Eulalee Ferguson, Dorothy Danville, Lloyd Powell, Josette Powell, and Jon Powell.

She is predeceased by her parents, Sydney Adolphus Powell and Maysie Rennitta Powell.
