Ludwig's obituary

Ludwig “Lou” Tuman — beloved son, brother, husband, father, and friend — passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2024. Born to Turan and Vladimir Tuman in Iran on July 29, 1952, Lou spent his early years in various cities throughout the United States, where his brothers Joseph and John were born. From a very young age, Lou exhibited an incredible talent for piano performance and music composition. As an example, after winning the annual Youth Audition sponsored by the Merced Symphony Association, he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 Op. 19 in B flat major as a piano soloist at only 15 years of age, accompanied by the 60-member Merced Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nicola Iacovetti.

While studying music composition at Harvard University, Lou learned about and embraced the Bahá’í Faith. He later set out to Venezuela both to help develop Bahá’í communities and to immerse himself in the rich music of the region. There he met his wife, Eva, and they soon welcomed their sons Sequoya (who sadly passed away at an early age) and David. While in Venezuela he researched and wrote a book about the role of art in the Bahá’í community, Mirror of the Divine, which was published by George Ronald in 1993.

In 1995, Lou returned to the United States with his wife and child, where the family adjusted to the array of American cultures in California. Lou spent the next 28 years in Oxnard, California, where he composed world-embracing music and taught hundreds of budding musicians over the years. A summary of his works can be found at LudwigTuman.com, including several from his Choral Tales project. Throughout his life, Ludwig was devoted to uplifting others, whether that was with his music, through service, or by sharing his love of the Bahá’í Faith. May all those who knew him carry his legacy forward and honor his beautiful life.

Lou is now reunited with his son, Sequoya, and father, Vladimir, and is survived by his mother, Turan, his brothers Joseph and John, his wife Eva, and his son and daughter-in-law David and Talisa.
