Born to Creola Burch and Paul Burton in Hickory, NC, Lucy Frances Woods illuminated the lives of all she touched with her infectious smile and vibrant personality. Passing peacefully at Atrium-Pineville Hospital in Charlotte, NC, she leaves behind a legacy carved from over three decades of remarkable dedication and success at New York University Hospital, where she held an illustrious career as an administrator, cherished by colleagues who admired her professionalism and warmth.
Lucy was a natural at forming connections, weaving a tapestry of friends and family who cherished her wit, kindness, and steadfast support. Post-retirement, she selflessly returned to Hickory to care for her mother, reaffirming her deep commitment to family, a devotion that never wavered.
Known for her "spicy" personality and eternal optimism, Lucy always saw the good in everyone, embracing life with style and grace. A true connoisseur of fashion, she was both a trendsetter and the fashion police; her sartorial elegance left a lasting impression wherever she went.
Lucy delighted in sharing traditional southern cuisine, with favorites like cornbread, buffalo wings, mac-and-cheese, and collard greens, capturing both her heritage and her zest for life. Her profound faith anchored her as a committed member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she participated in numerous ministry programs and practiced generosity.
Her life was intertwined with two vibrant families: her roots in Hickory, and her heart-made home in New York. She leaves behind her beloved sister, Joan Woods, her lifelong confidante Geraldine Bennett, goddaughter Tracey Questell and the Questell family from the Bronx, uncles Calvin and Napoleon Burch, cherished aunts Virginia and Linda Lee Burch, and countless cousins, relatives, and friends.
Lucy’s memory was honored in services held on December 2, 2023, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hickory, NC. A celebration of her remarkable life will continue with a commemorative event planned for New York in 2025.
