Lucy's obituary
Lucy Ann Saucedo (Chavez), beloved mother, Grandma “Abuela,” great-grandmother “Mogo”, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, in Beech Island, South Carolina. She was 101 years old.
Lucy was born on January 7, 1924, in Calexico, California, to Felicitas Cortez Chavez and Ysmael Chavez. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings—Frank Chavez, Marcelina Chavez Cordero, Dolores C. Garcia, James “Diego” Chavez, Pedro Chavez, and Maria Chavez—as well as her first husband, Frank Roberson Jr, and second husband, Conrad Saucedo.
In her early years of marriage, Lucy and Frank made their home in Hanford, CA, before moving their young daughters to Santa Clara, where they began a new chapter and built lasting memories. Over her long and meaningful life, Lucy also lived in San Jose, CA; Pleasanton, CA; Discovery Bay, CA; Clearfield, UT; and most recently, Beech Island, SC. No matter where she lived, her heart was always with her family.
She is survived by her loving children: Maria Golisano (Fred), Susan Roberson, and Deborah Lemoine (Jeffrey); her cherished grandchildren: Tania Gonzalez (Jorge), Jason Smurphat (Corina), Chelsea Drew, Sarah Niles (Jeffrey), Carissa Rechnitz, Jared Golisano, and Clayton Lemoine (Luna); and her adored great-grandchildren: Joseph Smurphat, Jada Smurphat, Luciana Gonzalez, River Mitose Rechnitz, Olivia Smurphat, Daisy Smurphat, Santino Gonzalez, Otis Kuhn, Russell Smurphat, Emma Niles, Alice Niles, and Mollie Niles.
Lucy was known for her grace, her infectious smile, and the warmth of her laughter. She brought joy to every room she entered and always found time for a good game of bingo and a nightcap. Despite life’s challenges, especially growing up with very little, she taught herself to read and write—and carried a deep gratitude for life’s simple blessings.
Family was everything to Lucy. She spoke often and lovingly of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, cherishing each memory made across her 101 remarkable years. A devoted Catholic, she loved the Word of the Lord and lived out her faith with quiet strength and humility.
A celebration of life and small service will be held at a later date (TBD). In honoring Lucy’s memory, her family encourages everyone to remember the joy she brought, the love she gave, and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
