Lucius's obituary
Lucius "Terry" James III, age 66, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2024. He was born on November 28, 1957, to CMSgt Lucius James Jr. and Rosetta Durden at Pemiscot County Hospital in Hayti, Missouri. After graduating from San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino, California, he attended San Bernardino Valley College. Following in his father’s footsteps, Terry proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and was a dedicated veteran who carried the values of service and honor throughout his life.
Terry worked as a U.S. Army civilian recruiter for 3 years with Serco at the Alton, Illinois recruiting station. He enjoyed educating young men and women on the benefits they would gain while serving their country. Terry created an in-person tour of Scott AFB for future soldiers interested in experiencing military life.
Terry was a passionate lover of music and a talented musician. His love for creating music was matched only by his appreciation for good food and his enjoyment of travel, a love fostered by his experiences as a military child. He had a particular fondness for classic music and movies and cherished the memories of his many travels. Lucius was known for his great sense of humor, his love of telling jokes, and his enjoyment of great stories, which brought laughter and joy to those around him.
Terry treasured family above all things. He embraced the value and importance of family as one of his most heartfelt life lessons. Yet he also loved his friends dearly and believed they were like family, helping him through life’s good times and challenges.
Terry touched many lives by helping others produce music and create albums. He was always willing to lend a hand whenever someone needed help. His generosity and willingness to assist others in any way he could left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Terry was married to the former Donna Hiller and is survived by their two children, Lucius James IV and Summer Hayes (Ryan), and three grandchildren, Aviana, Elloree, and Leila Hayes. He also leaves behind his beloved mother, Rosetta James; his sisters, Frieda J. James, Lisa J. Salinas, and Rita James; several cousins; and several beloved nieces and nephews and their children: Marc Johnson (Ashli), Candace Johnson, James Henry, Jonnae McCray, and William Salinas. All will continue to hold memories of their beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and uncle in their hearts. He was preceded in death by his father, Lucius James Jr., and his brother, Derrick James.
Lucius James III will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of music, humor, love, cherished family memories, and loving friends will live on in the hearts and minds of all those who loved him.
