Lucy's obituary
The Robertson family lost a source of love and light when our beloved matriarch, Lucille Ann (Wagner) Robertson, passed away with family on December 26, 2023, at the age of 97.
Lucy was born on July 6, 1926, to Henry J. and Ruth (Bridgman) Wagner in Ithaca, NY. She was the third of seven children: Martha, Ruth (Tuttle), Lucille, Edith (Youngs), Janet (Love) and Thomas Arnold, who grew up and lived in and around the Syracuse, NY area for decades. She was a wonderful storyteller, weaving in fantasy with stories of family history, including how her family made it through the Great Depression together with love and humor.
Lucy graduated from Central High School in Syracuse in 1944 and worked in a nursery school while dating Charles A. Robertson, who was sent to serve in World War II shortly after. They married on February 15, 1946, when Charlie was on leave, and soon became parents to a daughter, Karen (Mara), and a son, Kris. Lucy worked to support her family while Charles served in both World War II and the Korean War, and later worked for more than two decades as the first female manager at Merchant’s Bank in Syracuse.
Charlie and Lucy built a home in Tully, NY, where they lived for 11 years. Their home on the lake was the site of many family birthday celebrations, Christmases and Thanksgivings. Lucy celebrated the 1,000 hour pin she received for volunteering at Community General Hospital in Syracuse before relocating to Bradenton, FL and eventually joining the Garden Lakes community in 1996. Charlie and Lucy flourished there and developed deep friendships for the rest of their lives.
Lucy loved spending time with her sisters Janet Love and Edith Youngs, who also lived in the area. Together with Lucy’s daughter Karen, they created the WaWa Sisterhood. This elite club of female Wagner descendants gets together to celebrate all that is wonderful about sisters and family through food and laughter, and the WaWas will carry on together while mourning the loss of one of the last original members.
Lucy’s radiant smile, positive energy and caring personality made her well loved by all who knew her. She was a wonderful baker and cook, loved picnics at the ocean, relaxing in her garden, riding around on her scooter, spending time with family and friends, and snuggling with her terrier, Charlie. Charlie now lives with Lucy’s granddaughter, Lindsey, and her husband, Brad, in Alexandria, VA.
Lucy and Charlie worshipped at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Sarasota, where there will be a service held on March 9 at 1:00 pm in her honor.
Lucy was predeceased by a brother, Henry (“Buddy),” her husband, Charles, who passed away in 2010, and her daughter, Karen (2022). She leaves behind a wealth of friends in addition to her siblings Janet and Thomas, her son, Kris (Sabine), her niece, Sherri Reagan, her granddaughters Shelly (Joel Eckel), Amy (Chuck Hurley), Sara (Travis Adams), Stacy (Michael Tyner) and Lindsey (Brad Lentz), and four great-grandchildren (Maddy, Timmy and Ava Hurley and Ori Adams).
Whenever family would leave her home, she would sing, “Goodbye, goodbye - be always kind and true.” You always were, Lucy, and we will always remember all the love and kindness you gave to us all.
