Lucia's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Lucia Vaina, a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to compassion, perseverance, and an unyielding pursuit of knowledge. She left us on July 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will forever inspire those who knew her.
Lucia wished to be remembered as a good person, and she embodied this aspiration in every facet of her life. From a young age, she was captivated by the mysteries of the human brain, particularly how we perceive the world through sight. This curiosity blossomed into a lifelong dedication to neuroscience, where she made significant contributions through her tireless research and mentorship. Her passion for understanding the brain touched countless lives, especially her many students, whom she guided with wisdom and encouragement.
A true and loyal friend, Lucia was a pillar of support, always ready to lend a listening ear or a helping hand. Her warmth and generosity knew no bounds, and her friendships were marked by unwavering loyalty and love. As a devoted wife, she shared a deep and enduring bond with her beloved husband, Prof. David Marr. Tragically, she lost him far too soon, yet she carried their love with grace and strength until her final days. We find solace in believing they are now reunited, their love eternal.
Lucia was a beacon of resilience, never giving up in the face of challenges, whether in her groundbreaking work or personal trials. Her love for her family, friends, and her life's work shone brightly, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A memorial service will be held on Aug 1, 2025, at 11 am at the Mount Auburn Cemetery.
Lucia's light will continue to guide us, and her memory will live on in the hearts of her students, colleagues, and friends. Rest in peace, dear friend.
