L'tanya's obituary
L’tanya “Tangee” Tillman-Winston made her transition into the fullness of God’s mercy on the evening of Sunday, April 21, 2024. Her husband and four children were by her side when she breathed her last breath, letting go and letting God one final time.
Born to the late Delores and Allen Tillman on August 5, 1955, and godchild of the late Shirley and Andrew Mayo, L’tanya lived a life of redemption. Like so many in our wounded world, she struggled to love herself until she turned her life and will over to the care of a loving God. With courage and grace, she embarked on a journey to discover what Rev. Tutu meant when he wrote,
God does not love us because we are lovable, but we are loveable precisely because God loves us. God’s love is what gives us our worth… We are the children of the divine love, and nothing can change that fundamental fact about us.
Over the years, as L’tanya’s faith continued to deepen, she became determined to reach out to others and help them along the way. She was especially devoted to children in the public school system who struggled with trauma as they worked to overcome challenges to learning. She never met a child she wouldn’t help through attentive care, unending support, and deep compassion. She also shared God’s love through her work with patients at Lincoln Hospital for many years.
After living most of her life in Harlem, NY, she moved to Durham, NC, with her beloved husband Cliff more than 15 years ago. Their home was and continues to be a haven for grandchildren, filled with delicious food, beautiful laughter, and faithful prayer. Every morning, she would read and pray Psalm 91:
You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.”
L’tanya is survived by Clifton Winston, her husband; their children Lasha A. Tillman-Nix and husband Sha, Andre Jamison and wife Rebecca, Troy L. Jamison and wife Tina, and Crystal Medlin and husband Joseph; her sisters Laverne, Yvette, Khadijah, and Geraldine; and her two godbrothers Leon and Paul. She is also survived by their grandchildren Richard (Shaneice), Kevin, Michael, Latisha (Christian), Kennie, Troy Jr., IJonnie, Alex, Princess, Shirley, Bella, Andre III, Markus, Shaniqua, Donte, Chaliyah, Tyrese, Gabrielle, Solomon, Kingston, and Latanya (her namesake) as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were like family.
Words cannot describe how much Tangee will be missed. We will yearn to hear her laughter, appreciate her classy style, embrace her eternal youthfulness, and admire her attentive care for others, yet we know that her spirit will be close to us as the journey of faith continues. Until that day when we see her again in glory, the angels will remind us:
Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand. Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand. Build your hopes on things eternal. Hold to God’s unchanging hand.
