Lowell's obituary
Lowell Eugene Powers, also known as “Gene” and “Red”, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loved ones on August 9th 2024. His untimely death was the result of Stage Four Metastatic Cancer, and he was a fighter to the very end.
Gene was born on October 15, 1964- the second of four children born to parents Brenda and Bill. He spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Myrtle Beach and Charlotte, NC along with his siblings, Eddie, Buzzy and Vickie. He was a very active child who enjoyed everything outside. Fishing, camping and boating were some of his favorite past-times. He also enjoyed sports of all kinds and hobbies such as model airplanes, go-carts and chopper bikes. The world was his playground and his family meant the world to him. He could tell stories about his childhood for days on end!
Along with his siblings, Gene spent most of his upbringing close to his aunt and uncles on his mom’s side and they enjoyed terrorizing each other to the fullest! He had always described his relationship to them akin to siblings and felt so blessed to had grown up in such a big family. They have been his tribe throughout his years.
Gene sacrificially dedicated 22 years of his life to the US Army. Serving his country was one of his greatest passions. In the course of his duty he participated in several assignments, some of which included Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Desert Falcon and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His awards included (but are not limited to) the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal. He retired honorably as an E-8 Master Sergeant. The sacrifices he made for our country both in terms of years of his life and the toil it took on him were immeasurable, and will be forever appreciated.
Gene was a beloved father of two, his daughter Caila and son Chase, as well as stepfather to Candyace and VJ. At the time of his passing he was blessed to be a grandfather to five. His legacy lives on through his surviving sister, Vickie, as well as all of his children and grandchildren. It is all of their hopes to once again see his face in Heaven some day.
In June 2024, shortly before his passing, Gene requested to be baptized by his daughter, Caila. He made peace with God and with all men as he professed Jesus Christ to be the Lord and Savior of his life. Gene expressed having as much peace as he possibly could entering into eternity. There was a noticeable calmness and steadiness to his demeanor throughout his fight with Cancer that was inspiring to those around him.
In honor of who he was and how he touched the lives of others, a Celebration of Life will be held; anyone who would like to come may attend. The date for this is to be determined and will be announced soon. Gene most enjoyed family traditions like BBQ, playing Poker, Corn hole, guitar, singing and simply swapping stories! We will do those things in his honor.
