Les's obituary

Dr. Lourens Erasmus Smit de Villiers, fondly and better known as Les, Oupa, Dad, passed away on July 25, 2023 and is now in the arms of his Lord and Savior.

Born on May 11, 1935, Les held three things above all else: Faith; Family; and Friends. His Faith in Jesus and his salvation was upmost in his mind.

Les lived a life rich in experience and filled with accomplishments. His impact was felt far and wide, from the intimate circles of his family to the international halls of diplomacy. Overflowing with humor, love, care, and an everlasting curiosity of life, Les served as a mentor to many, bringing warmth and light into the lives of those he interacted with.

Most notably, Les held esteemed roles as a diplomat, negotiating with the likes of Reagan, Nixon, Carter, and Rabin, amongst other notable figures. His intellectual prowess was evident through his PhD, further highlighting his dedication to knowledge and learning. Above all of his professional success, Les's role as a father, grandfather, husband, uncle, and friend was what he regarded as his greatest accomplishments.

Les's enduring legacy lies in his relentless pursuit of knowledge and thorough documentation of his life and career. He authored over 100 books ranging from politics and business, to biographical, and even mystery novels.

Les leaves behind his wife, Ruth de Villiers, his daughter, Lauren de Villiers, his son and daughter-in-law, Andries & Juliana de Villiers, and his grandchildren, Andries "AJ" and Alessandra de Villiers, who continue to honor his legacy. His love and affection enriched the lives of his family members and friends daily.

A Celebration of Life for Les will be held at 12555 SW 34th Pl, Davie FL 33330, on Saturday July 29, 2023, at 11:00 AM (Ceremony and Zoom will start promptly at 12:00 pm) to remember and honor this extraordinary man.

While we mourn the loss of Les, we also celebrate the remarkable life he led and the love, care, and wisdom he shared with us. He will be greatly missed, and forever remembered.
