Louise's obituary

Louise Catherine McElwain (nee: Del Gos) 81, resident of Vero Beach, Florida entered into eternal rest on November 19th, 2023, with her loving husband and children by her side. Louise was born to the late Julia Panek Del Gos and John Del Gos on May 19th, 1942. Louise was raised in Astoria (Queens), New York City, surrounded by many loving relatives. She graduated from Long Island City High School and then continued her education at Queens College of Nursing where she received her Registered Nurse Degree.

In 1965 Louise married Michael McElwain. The young couple resided in Forrest Hills, New York before Michael’s company, Squibb Pharmaceuticals, transferred to central New Jersey. The couple decided to settle and raise their family in Edison, New Jersey.

Louise was employed as a Registered Nurse for the Birchwood Convalescent Center in Edison for over 28 years, demonstrating care and true compassion for her geriatric patients. Families of her patients constantly complimented her for treating their loved one with dignity and respect through their twilight years.

Louise enjoyed traveling and would frequent Aruba, Bermuda, and the Bahamas. She and her husband enjoyed several cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean. She often spoke fondly of her trip to Italy, which she took with her sister, Roberta. When she was a resident of New Jersey she was a regular visitor to the Atlantic City casinos. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting, needle point, ceramics, completing all types of puzzles, and playing cards. Playing cards with her friends at Vista Plantation the last few years provided her with so much joy and she often scheduled her medical appointments around her card schedule.

Louise is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years Michael; daughter Kathleen Ryan and her husband Joseph; son John and his wife Carolyn; daughter Patricia Toth and her husband David; sister Roberta Kabasinskas; grandchildren: Kevin, Matthew, Phillip, Carl, Michael, and Jake; and a great-grandchild Robert.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, January 20th, 2024, at 10:30 am at St. Helena’s R.C. Church, 950 Grove Ave. Edison, NJ 08820.

In her loving memory, donations can be made to the VNA Hospice House (901 37th Street Vero Beach, FL. 32960) where she was treated with compassion, dignity, and respect during her final hours.
