Louise's obituary

Louise Patricia Goodenough

March 20, 1931 – July 31, 2024

Our dear Mother and family matriarch, Louise Patricia Goodenough passed from this life and into the loving arms of Jesus on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. Her husband Roy Lee Goodenough preceded her in death on January 6, 2016 after 67 years of marriage. She is survived by all of her five children Kenneth Roy Goodenough of Dallas, Oregon, Richard Stillman Goodenough and his wife Sheila of Marshfield, Massachusetts, Patricia Lee Sulaty and her husband Joe Sulaty of Whitney, Texas, Teresa Louise Alexander and her husband David Alexander of Aubrey, Texas, and Roy Leon Goodenough and his wife Jennifer Goodenough of Wann, Oklahoma. She is also survived by grand children, great-grand children, great-great grand children, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was born Louise Patricia Sibert on March 20, 1931, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to parents Richard Sibert and Florence Patton Sibert. The family relocated to California and she spent her early childhood in Los Angeles, California along with her only sister, Virginia who was a life-long best friend of Louise. The family returned to Oklahoma when Louise was 11 years old. She and Virginia loved riding horses and one time they led their horse, Smokey into their grandmother’s living room. Don’t ask what happened next.

At 17, Louise married Roy Lee Goodenough of Riply, Oklahoma in 1948 and lived in the Stillwater area as they began their family. In 1950 they moved to Washougal, Washington and lived a rather rustic pioneering lifestyle on an 80 acre forested hillside off from the Little Washougal River several miles northeast of town. Louise and Roy and growing family lived in a 20 x 20 foot house that had no electricity initially, no indoor plumbing, and cougars screeching outside at night. Roy was logging the property and taking the trees to a paper mill in Camas using an old WWII weapons carrier to make a living for the young and growing family.

After a few years they relocated to Washougal where Louise began working at the Pendleton Woolen Mill in August of 1956. They relocated to nearby Vancouver, Washington where they began a taxi service. Roy and Louise were devout members of the Vancouver Church of Christ for several decades and lived in Camas and the Vancouver area during those years.

Her greatest accomplishment was to nurture her children in the faith in Jesus and all are devout followers of Christ to this day. A life-long verse that Louise cherished is Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Chapter 91 of the Psalms was also a favorite passage.

One of Louise’s talents was oil painting. She became an accomplished artist and was an active member of the Society of Washington Artists for many years and often participated in juried shows.

In 2021 she relocated to Whitney, Texas to live her remaining years with daughter Pat and her husband Joe Sulaty.
