Lorraine's obituary
In the gentle embrace of dawn on March 30, 2023, Dr. Lorraine M. Howard, a beacon of wisdom and love, concluded her remarkable journey on earth amidst the loving circle of her family in Seattle, Washington. Born to the warm and guiding lights of Lawrence and Vivian Howard on February 21, 1947, Lorraine's roots delved deeply into the rich soils of the South, specifically in Shreveport, Louisiana, intertwining with her profound affinity for mathematics, a field where she not only flourished but also illuminated the path for countless others. Yet, it was Philadelphia, PA, that truly became her haven, where she spent the greater part of her life, drawn there by the pursuit of higher education.
Lorraine's journey began alongside her beloved twin brother, Lawrence Howard Jr., and cherished sister, Pauline Jackson, both of whom preceded her in transition. Her brilliance as a scholar shone early, culminating in her graduation from Notre Dame High School in 1965. Her academic quest led her to the prestigious University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), where her passion for mathematics transformed into a lifelong devotion. At UPenn, she was adorned with a Mathematics degree, an MBA from the Wharton Business School, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics, each step a testament to her indomitable spirit and love for the written word.
Her career, as varied as it was impactful, saw her shaping young minds as Assistant Dean at the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts and Sciences, and as a mentor and educator in finance and mathematics at Temple University, Drexel University, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The skies called her next, to Boeing, where she contributed to the CH-47 Chinook helicopter project, blending her expertise in mathematics and finance. Her journey then took a vibrant turn to Wall Street in New York, a realm where her passion found its ultimate expression. Lorraine's vision and insights propelled her to new heights, eventually leading her to pioneer her own finance company in the 1990s. Her dedication to education, especially encouraging young girls and women to embrace mathematics, left an indelible mark on the field, making her a vanguard in the advocacy for personalized learning and educational innovation.
Above all, Lorraine was a devout Christian, with her family forming the essence of her world. She was a beloved daughter, a cherished mother to Ashley Townes, and a friend whose warmth and generosity knew no bounds. Her life was a tapestry of joyous moments—cooking, attending Broadway shows, traveling the world, and reveling in the beauty of gospel music, chocolate delights, and the company of friends.
Lorraine's legacy is a luminous trail of kindness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to her family, her faith, and the transformative power of education. She leaves behind a world enriched by her presence, guided by her wisdom, and inspired by her belief in the boundless possibilities of faith and love, as echoed in her cherished verse, "With God, All Things are Possible" (Matthew 19:26).
As we prepare to celebrate Lorraine's extraordinary life in the months to come, we invite contributions in her memory to 'Women and Mathematics Education' (WME), an organization dear to her heart and one she elevated with her leadership and vision.
Lorraine, your light remains undimmed, your spirit unfettered, and your legacy everlasting. You are deeply missed, forever loved, and will always inspire those fortunate enough to have been touched by your grace and brilliance.
