Updates

Update from Jan. 11, 2026

"TextingwithLori" (https://www.instagram.com/tex…) is now live. It has taken me a long time to make this happen, but now it has. I had an idea related to living forward with Lori back in the summer time.

Here was my idea...
When you learn that someone dear to you has died, you think about your last interactions with them. At least, I did when I learned of the utterly unexpected and deeply tragic death of Lori Ann Scappino, my dear friend for 40 years and my sister-in-so-many-ways (the least of which is “in-law” though that was one of the ways). She and my brother, Randy Lanou, are/were deeply engaged in their respective businesses and communities, practicing good works for those around them, traveling often and with gusto, central to our immediate families’ connectedness, living out current dreams and planning for an interesting, exciting, and love-filled future.

My last interaction with her was a text. Our texts were often cryptic, sometimes only a photo, usually about food, plants, or when necessary, plans. I'll share it in a memory as I cannot upload an image here.

Lori and I share a love of food, plants, port, making things from scratch, preparing meals for others, gardening, composting, the cycles of life, science, and a deep commitment to a nourishing and compassionate way of eating. And, we have a shared love of everyday absurdity and both sport loud, joyous, erupting laughs.

I have spent many years thinking as I go through my daily life that I want to share an image, a place, an activity, a recipe, a seed, a flavor, a moment with Lori. I am incredibly fortunate that I was able to do so for 2/3rds of my life to date. That urge is still with me. And, is the idea behind this (at first blog and now) instagram page.

I’ll reflect on moments and communications we shared and will also share it forward. I want Lori (and those who also love her) to know that I (with others) have adopted her sourdough starter, learned to make her cracker recipe (its about time on that one), harvested from and tended her “very large and green” garden, found homes for her many orchids (thanks to many of you), made salsa from her yellow tomatoes for her peeps in her beautiful home and so much more.

And, I want those who engage with "textingwithlori" to benefit from her wit, her passions, her intellect, and the joy we shared and share interacting with companion animals, humans in our lives, gardens, and delicious food.

Obituary

Lori and I made fun of ourselves for hanging up a world map because it felt childlike and silly to pin the places to which we traveled together. Silly or not, we had fun and kept it updated with frequent travel. The map is called “The Adventures of Lori & Randall” and it includes one of Lori’s favorite Jimmy Buffet quotes: “I’d rather die while I’m living than live while I’m dead.” These are not …
