Lois's obituary

Lois Ruth Alexander Ferguson left this world peacefully at age 84 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She is greatly missed by her two daughters, Fellene Barbara Ferguson Gaylord of Portland, OR, and Susan Joy Ferguson, of Schaumburg, IL, whose devoted care included daily visits full of comfort and treats. In addition to her daughters, Lois is survived by her grandchildren, Ryan Hendrickson, wife Kortney Hendrickson, and Lois' great-granddaughter Zoey Hendrickson of Sugar Grove, IL; Sara Lutman and husband Chris Lutman of Schaumburg, IL; Krista Gaylord of West Linn, OR and Steven Gaylord, of Portland, OR; and son-in-law Jeremy Gaylord of Portland, OR. Her husband, Gleason Starr Ferguson, and 4 sisters have preceded her in death.

Lois was a 5th generation Chicagoan who grew up in the Ravenswood neighborhood where her father Lewis Alexander ran an electric shop. She was the eldest of 5 girls -- Lois, Linda, Laraine, Lee Anne, and Lenore. As a young woman Lois discovered her love of singing and studied voice at the North Shore Conservatory of Music after graduating high school.

She and Starr loved to go to choral concerts on dates, and she later shared her musical talent with the congregation of First Baptist Church of Elmhurst where she was a member of the choir for many years, and in local talent shows. She was happiest at home, but enjoyed traveling across the USA with her family in the summer, collecting rock samples from all over the country to decorate her abundant flower beds at home. Visiting the Rocky Mountains in Colorado was one of her favorite trips.

She lived most of her married years in Elmhurst, Illinois as a home maker raising two busy girls, active in First Baptist Church life, and volunteering in the local homeowner's association. She later pursued careers in real estate and court reporting. She then provided loving child care for her nearby grandchildren, Ryan and Sara, as they grew up. She was a warm and generous person, always ready to defend the underdog and protect the innocent. Her kindness to young people in crisis will always be remembered.
