Lois's obituary
Lois Jean Davenport, 85, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 20, 2019 in La Grande, Oregon. She was born at home on June 17, 1933 to Richard Davenport and Jean Wilcox. She had resided with her daughter, Judy Wheeler, for 1.5 years. Previously, Lois had lived in Golden Valley, AZ for 23 years.
Lois grew up on The Big Elk River east of Toledo, OR during The Great Depression and was born into very humble circumstances and a musically talented family. Lois excelled at singing, writing songs, and playing a guitar and anyone who heard Lois sing could never forget her beautiful, powerful voice. Lois didn't choose a particular career and, because of her warm, welcoming personality, and ability to listen to others, ended up being a lifelong bartender, unbeatable rhythm guitar player, and lead singer.
Lois's two great passions were “The Barn”, her 40 acre farm, east of Toledo, OR and her acre of property on the Mohave Desert west of Kingman, AZ in Golden Valley. Lois was never afraid of hard work and lived off the grid on both of these properties. She helped turn an old barn into a home, raised her own vegetables and fruit on a half acre garden, and had an orchard that included apples, plums, and cherries. She picked blackberries and froze them, made jam and jelly and used some of them for her famous home made balloon wine. She picked mint and made delicious mint jelly. Even with a big family to raise, Lois never knew a stranger and all were welcome in her home. When she moved to AZ, she took a dry, dusty piece of property that had nothing on it and shaped it into a home to her liking. There was no electricity or water so she had water hauled in and put into big tanks, and had generators and solar panels for her electricity. It was, to all of her family, a very unorthodox existence, but for Lois, it was her small piece of paradise on earth. Lois was never influenced by the convention of society and always lived by her own rules, sometimes to the chagrin of her numerous children.
Lois is survived by seven children. Jesse Logan of Kingman, AZ, Josh Logan of TX, Judy Logan Wheeler of Salem, OR, Jeni Logan Olsen of Kingman, AZ, Dallas Heard II of Kingman, AZ, Daniel Heard of Kingman, AZ, and Audry Heard Emon of Austin, TX. Lois was preceded in death by 3 siblings, Joy Davenport Bennor, William Davenport, and David Davenport, two daughters, Brenda Heard Myers, Kingman, AZ and Bonnie Heard, Toledo, OR. Lois left behind a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great's. Lois generously donated her body to science so that others could benefit from the research.
