Lloyd's obituary

Lloyd Harry Tripp
September 27, 1929 - April 12, 2020
On Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020 Lloyd Harry Tripp entered the Eternal Life of the Resurrection. He was born in Marine City, Michigan on September 27, 1929, growing up on a 20-acre farm with his parents, two sisters and three brothers. Lloyd and his siblings aIended Marine City High School. He married Ann Beatrice McCarthy on September 27, 1952 and three days later entered the U.S. Army. Lloyd, who was raised in the Methodist faith, surprised his new bride by converting to Catholicism while in the Army, serving as a military police officer in Salzburg, Austria. He returned home to his wife and eldest daughter, Karen (Bryan Jinnett), soon adding David (Gail Berry), then Patricia (Paul Winsemius), Mary (Greg Lewis), Jane (Robertson), Calla Jean (Mark Laesch), Margaret (Mark Taylor), and Paul (Theresa Balogh). As a member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Warren, MI, Lloyd served on the parish council and was a member of Pius X Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed being one of the readers at Sunday Mass, as well as a Eucharistic Minister. Until he was well into his 80s, Lloyd was a regular American Red Cross blood donor.
After graduation from GMI, Lloyd started his General Motors engineering career at Detroit Transmission where he met his wife, Ann. In 1958, he transferred to the GM Tech Center in Warren. He completed his 40 year GM career while working at Inland Fisher Guide. In retirement, Lloyd and Ann lived in Fairfield Glade, TN for 18 years where he helped build the first 54 homes of the new Habitat for Humanity chapter. One of his favorite activities with Habitat was working with the teens who would be moving into their new home, instilling in them a sense of pride, and teaching them basic home maintenance skills such as tightening doorknobs and drawer pulls, cleaning window tracks, and gardening chores. Additionally, he was generous with his talents and found great satisfaction in tutoring at-risk youth. Lloyd’s stewardship is something his eight children can relate to, and now so do his 14 grandchildren. In his spare time, Lloyd enjoyed the golf courses around his home in Fairfield Glade, watching the deer, and working around his wooded lot.

Lloyd loved coaching his children’s baseball teams, building backyard skating ponds, playing horseshoes, golfing, and bowling. He was a conscientious recycler before it was popular and maintained his love of gardening from his days on the farm
with his backyard vegetable garden. It was in these simple pleasures that he found the most joy. A man of strong convictions but gentle ways, unrivaled work ethic and steadfast patience, throughout his life, Lloyd taught by example the value of service, kindness, and generosity.

Lloyd’s passing leaves a hole in the hearts of his loving wife Ann, their children, 14 grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition, he leaves eight step-grandchildren and their 17 children. Lloyd was preceded in death by his five siblings and his daughter Patricia.

The levity of Erma Bombeck was often present in the Tripp family home, but this particular Bombeck quote sums up Lloyd’s life. “When I stand before God at the end of my life I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.” In the eyes of his family, Lloyd gave his all and then some.

A mass and memorial service celebration will be scheduled at a later date. For those wishing to honor Lloyd’s memory the family suggests donations in his name to the Bellbrook St. Joseph Mercy Senior Communities, 873 W. Avon Road, Rochester Hills, MI 48307, the American Red Cross, or Habitat for Humanity.
