Background
When Lloyd was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2012, we were both devastated. But one day Lloyd saw a plaque that said, "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain." And we decided to dance together through whatever PD would bring.
When the James Madison University began a Dance for Parkinson's program, Lloyd was the first to sign up. We loved that it was something we could do together, and appreciated the creative ways we danced and used our bodies, the live music accompaniment, and the caring and positive interactions with the JMU volunteer students. Lloyd in particular enjoyed the students, asking about their lives and often attending their dance recitals. We found out that several dance students were so inspired by Lloyd and their time volunteering with the Dance for Parkinson's program, that they continued to work with the PD community after graduation, starting their own non-profit, Dancing in the Rain.
There is a cost for students to receive the specific training required to be part of the Dance for Parkinson's program, and the Lloyd Mast Dance for Parkinson's Endowment will provide yearly scholarships for two students to receive this training. Lloyd would be thrilled to know that just as JMU students helped him during dance class, this endowment will help JMU students and the Parkinson's community to dance together for years to come.
