Background
At the age of 59, my mother's difficult battle with Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia came to an end.
Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia (FTD) is a rare form of dementia that destroys the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain which severely impairs a person's executive processing skills.
Frontotemporal Lobe dementia is very different from the early symptoms of more common types of dementia. For example, it affects people at a younger age and causes rapid decline compared to Alzheimer's disease.
That is the beast of Frontotemporal Lobe Dementia: Long before it takes your memories (I wager that she actually had minimal memory loss), it slowly chips away an individual's personality and functioning.
Family members with loved ones affected by FTD suddenly struggle to understand the confusing and often dangerous behavior that FTD causes.
Frontotemporal Lobe dementia also took away her end-of-life plans. As a lifelong advocate for burial and life insurance, my mother had a burial policy that lapsed during the onset of her dementia symptoms.
With dementia, families are often surprised to find out their loved one was hiding away mounting bills and missing money.
Individuals with Frontotemporal Lobe dementia are vulnerable to abuse. They can easily be victims of financial, physical, and mental exploitation.
Donations to Lisa will be used for the purchase of a headstone, and a celebration of life memorial with her family and friends.
