Linwood's obituary
Linwood Richard Leary, Sr. was born in Pitt County, North Carolina, to the late Richard and Mamie Edwards Leary. From an early age, he embodied a strong sense of responsibility, curiosity about the world, and a deep love for family—qualities that defined his life and legacy.
Linwood proudly served his country in the United States Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. He later graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, laying the foundation for a dynamic and multifaceted career. He served the people of North Carolina as an Agriculture Extension Agent in Franklin and Caswell Counties and went on to work with Upjohn Pharmaceuticals in the Agricultural Division and the Menley and James (Love Cosmetics) a division of SmithKline as a Sales representative.
His entrepreneurial spirit eventually led him to Washington, DC, where he founded U.S. Chemicals as an independent sales representative. Never one to slow down, Linwood later became the owner and operator of Leary Auto Transport before concluding his professional journey as a real estate agent with Weichert Realty in Camp Springs, Maryland.
After retirement, Linwood fully embraced his love of adventure and travel. A true world traveler and road warrior at heart, he spent his days visiting friends and family across the United States, strengthening bonds and creating memories wherever he went. He loved the outdoors—hunting, fishing, camping, caring for his horses, and taking long road trips. He took great pride in his beautiful garden, generously sharing its bounty with friends and neighbors.
Outgoing, supportive, and full of stories, Linwood never met a stranger. He delighted in meeting new people, sharing his life experiences, and offering wisdom, encouragement, and laughter. To his many nieces and nephews, he was the “favorite uncle”—a constant source of love, guidance, and joy. Above all, he was a devoted family man who showed up, stayed connected, and made everyone feel seen and valued.
Linwood Richard Leary, Sr. leaves to cherish his memory his son, Linwood Leary, Jr. (Danielle “Cherita” White); daughter, Glenna Leary; granddaughter, Jocelyn; his companion, Josephine Thomas, and her daughter, Nedra Thomas (Anthony Heath), Nazara Heath; his sister, Shirley High (Moses); and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his eleven siblings: Wilbur, Zebedee, Vivian, Frederick “Tick,” Ruth, Elmer, Barbara, Laura Marie, Sandra, Oliver, and Ray.
Linwood’s legacy of love, adventure, service, and family devotion will live on in the many lives he touched and the countless stories he leaves behind.
