Linda's obituary
Linda Beth Pobiner (née Shemler), 77, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, at her assisted living facility in Silver Spring, Maryland. She was cremated, and her family will hold a celebration of her life at a later date.
Born on February 3, 1948, Linda lived a life defined by kindness, courage, and compassion. She largely grew up in New Rochelle, New York, earned her undergraduate degree from Park University (formerly Park College) in Missouri in 1970, and her master’s degree from Lehman College in New York in 1973. Most of her professional life was devoted to special education, where she specialized in teaching children who were blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, or had multiple disabilities. She was skilled in communicating in American Sign Language and reading Braille.
Linda’s career reflected her deep empathy and her belief that every child deserves to be seen, heard, and understood. She taught and volunteered at organizations including The Lighthouse and Blythedale Children’s Hospital, working with children with complex medical needs. Later in life, she continued serving others as a dental assistant, daycare teacher, and receptionist at Community Living Corporation, which supports adults with developmental disabilities.
In 2014, Linda was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She retired in 2016 and moved to Florida for the warm weather and to be closer to her son. In 2023, her daughter moved her to Maryland so the family could care for her during her later years.
Linda’s personal journey was one of remarkable transformation and faith. After overcoming addiction in her younger years, she lived more than 41 years in recovery—serving as a mentor, friend, and inspiration to countless others in the recovery community. Her life was a living testament that healing and redemption are possible. She shared her story openly, loved deeply, and embodied spiritual principles that brought light to everyone she met.
Those who knew Linda remember her as joyful, authentic, and filled with gratitude. She loved cats, good laughter, long talks, and making genuine connections with people. Her kindness was boundless, and her presence left others feeling seen and valued.
Linda’s legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched with her compassion, laughter, and unwavering belief in the power of love, service, and recovery.
Linda was predeceased by her parents, Samuel Charles and Anne Shemler (née Lieberman), and her former husband, Howard J. Pobiner. She is survived by her brother, Howard Shemler of Fort Washington, MD; her daughter, Briana Pobiner, son-in-law Peter Nassar, and grandson Toby Nassar of Silver Spring, MD; and her son, Alexander Pobiner, of Coral Springs, FL.
Her family welcomes donations to Blythedale Children’s Hospital or Community Living Corporation in her honor as a celebration of her lifelong dedication to helping others.
