Linda's obituary

Linda Marie Bartash, 71, passed away on June 30, 2020 in Silver Spring, MD after a courageous battle with COVID-19. Linda had a beautiful heart and soul, and was a friend to everyone she met. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Linda’s joyous laughter and uplifting smile will always be remembered.

She was born in Fond du Lac, WI in 1949, graduated New Holstein, WI High School in 1967, and attended the University of Wisconsin in Sheboygan. After that, Linda was drawn to the Virginia, Washington D.C. area, first living in Richmond, VA for a few years. She later settled in the Four Corners/Silver Spring, MD area, where she resided until her passing. Linda made a career in insurance that lasted over 45 years where she worked most recently as an insurance premium auditor until her retirement from Old Republic Insurance, subsidiary Bitco Insurance, in 2019.

Linda loved volunteering for community theater groups. She especially enjoyed sharing her love of theater with children in Prince George's and Montgomery County in Maryland, where she lived for over 40 years. Local theaters in the area know Linda well as an accomplished director, producer, set and lighting designer, costume designer, props mistress and any other backstage tasks; she may have even been caught acting on stage. She knew every inch of a theater and personally worked with all involved putting on productions.

Linda worked with and supported many of the best community theatres in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, such as Silver Spring Stage, Laurel Mills Playhouse, Rockville Community Theater, Greenbelt Arts Center, Quotidian Theater, Washington Stage Guild, and Synetic Theater. She was also on the board and in previous years served as executive director at Silver Spring Stage and was the founding member of the Burtonsville Players located in the Laurel Mill Playhouse in Laurel, MD.

Linda was the co-owner of a costume shop, The Theatre Depot, in the early 1980’s with Producer, Char Harre (RIP). They designed and made thousands of “Hog Noses” for Washington’s NFL Football team, working from the old Rail Depot in Riverdale, MD.

Linda’s love of theater also led to her love for Cecil, a fellow actor with a personality as unique as Linda’s. Together they enjoyed Caribbean cruise ships, resort vacations, and entertaining guests. Linda loved eclectic recipes to cook for others and was a gracious host, full of laughter and often with song, to all that visited her home. With relatives throughout the U.S., Linda made it a point to visit whenever possible, and it was always a fun time when she did.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Algirdas and Mildred Bartash, brothers Alan and Ronald, and Ron’s son, Micah Bartash Cochran. She is survived by her husband, Cecil Thompson; Cecil's daughter, Olivia Thompson of Silver Spring, MD; her brothers Dennis (Nancy) of Canyon Country, CA, Warren (Patricia) of La Crescent, MN, and Brian (Ruby) of Dallas, GA; her sister, Donna (Michael Meccia) of Georgetown, TX; her sister-in-law, Beverly, Myrtle Beach, SC; her aunt, Viola Schmitz-Smith (107) of Costa Mesa, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of Linda’s life will be held at a future date.
