Lily's obituary

Lily Leah Hoddes of Concord, California, passed away peacefully at the age of 96, on November 30, 2022. Lily was born on June 17, 1926 in Laingsburg, South Africa and was the youngest of eight siblings in a religious Jewish family.

After school Lily became a nurse at a young age and worked in a psychiatric hospital in Johannesburg during WWII caring for the returning soldiers. Lily subsequently spent her remaining career in Johannesburg as a nurse in physician offices.

In 1948, Lily married Sonny Hoddes in Johannesburg. They had three children, Merle, Charles, and Kenny. Lily was an active member with the South Africa Red Cross and very involved in charity work with her husband, Sonny. She loved her family and friends and participated in events almost every weekend in Johannesburg.

In 1978, Lily and Sonny immigrated to the USA and resided in California. Lily retired in 1991 from Workers Compensation Fund in San Francisco and was widowed 6 weeks later. In 1989 Lily purchased a house in Concord. She remarried Keith Greendale in 1995 and was again widowed in 2016. Among her favourite activities were travelling, dancing, crocheting, Tai Chi, water aerobics and tea parties with her family and friends. She was very affectionate with her children in spite of the fact that Charles and Kenny were living far away.

Lily was predeceased by her parents, four brothers and three sisters as well as her two husbands and many friends. She is survived by children, Merle, Charles and Kenny, grandchildren David, Yann, Ethan, Leanne, Tania and Thomas. Great grandchildren Tyler, Alyssa, Aidan and June, and many other dear family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held via Zoom on February 4, 2023, at 11AM PST. This will allow friends and family in other countries to participate in the celebration. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations could be made in Lily’s name to organizations you feel strongly about. Lily was very generous with charities and was always willing to support those in need.
