Leslie's obituary

Leslie Florence Nelsen, 64, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on November 12, 2024. Leslie was born on September 24, 1960, to Philip and Audrey Florence. She grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, graduated from Lakeside High School, and attended Wheaton College, earning her bachelor’s degree in communications. She loved to remind everyone that she was a good communicator!

At Wheaton College, Leslie met Gregg, and they went on their first date on her birthday in their junior year. They spent 40 years together and had a full family with four kids. They loved to travel, and most recently got to experience Israel together. Their love was not only deep and enduring but also playful and full of laughter, creating a bond that will be remembered by all who knew them. Leslie was a devoted and loving mother, and she did so much for her kids. She was involved in their schools, sports, birthdays, prayer groups with other moms, and threw the best Christmases. Even with four children and a jam-packed schedule, she managed to make sure that each one felt special and spent one-on-one time with them. She transitioned seamlessly into the role of "Nanny" and was adored by her grandkids. Some called her a baby whisperer, and she enjoyed playing with and watching her five grandkids grow.

Leslie made friends in all areas of her life and experienced true community with deep and lasting friendships. Her community is a testament to the warmth, kindness, and generosity she shared with those lucky enough to know her. Her laugh was infectious, and she was always the funniest in the room! She had the gift of beautiful wit and timely humor. Her friendship was one that demanded little, offered generously, and received graciously whatever was given in return. She was all in with her friendships, yet without expectation.

Leslie had a strong faith and relationship with Jesus. She was a founding member of Willow Creek Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and Crown Financial classes with Gregg. She was involved in the Women's Ministry, a small group, and discipled women in the church. She was involved in many Bible studies outside of church with friends over the years and developed deep friendships through them. Leslie was a board member of ELEVATE Orlando, a nonprofit focused on building long-term, life-changing relationships with urban youth, equipping them to thrive and contribute to their community. She was a mentor to many of the women who were on staff with ELEVATE, and regularly shared about the joy that they brought her.

Leslie is predeceased by her father Philip Florence. She is survived by her husband Gregg; mother Audrey Florence of Atlanta, Ga.; sister Phyllis Florence of Atlanta, Ga.; brother Scott Florence (Shan) of Roswell, Ga.; sons Mark (Charlotte) Nelsen, Graham (Sarah Beth) Nelsen, Riley (Gigi) Nelsen; daughter Abigail Nelsen; five grandchildren: Hannah, Chloe, David, Jonathan, and Nash; and nieces and nephews.

Leslie's family will host a Memorial Service at Willow Creek Church (4725 E. Lake Dr., Winter Springs, FL 32708) on December 7, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. Please join them; the family would be honored by your presence. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to ELEVATE Orlando (https://elevateorlando.org/) where a scholarship will be set up in Leslie’s name.
