Leslie's obituary
Leslie Barber (77) of Hamilton Ontario, passed away in the early morning hours of Jan 5th, 2024. He suffered a stroke post lung cancer surgery and later passed away peacefully and with dignity.
Leslie, fondly known as Les was born to Mary-Jane and Leslie Barber on December 7th, 1946, in Belfast Ireland. He and his family immigrated to Canada in 1956, eventually moving to North York, Ontario. He lived an exciting life with his foot in many avenues and ventures over the years, but his most memorable attribute was his athletic abilities. He was an All-Star baseball player and outstanding catcher landing him many roles in different professional teams, travelling across Canada and The United States. Leslie Barber was inducted into the Softball Alberta Hall of Fame in 2007, for his skill set and memorable baseball tenure.
Les is survived by his three children Lauren, Joey, and Scott Barber, along with his dear grandchildren Ellie, Noah, Kiran, Leighten, and his newest grandson Anthony.
Aside from his love for baseball, Les was passionate about music, making meaningful connections, and his family. He had a way of making people feel greater than they were, with the relatable stories that he could tell, and timeless jokes he would have you on your knees laughing. His children and grandchildren were his biggest accomplishment, he was always so proud, boasting about his family to anyone willing to listen. He loved nothing more than spending time with his adult daughter Lauren, and her daughter Ellie.
Leslie was a dialysis patient and in the last 8 years a kidney transplant survivor. Despite spending much of that time in and out of the hospital, he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his entire journey, he cracked jokes with his grown children, made silly faces with his grandchildren, and even pulled some light-hearted pranks on the nurses. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.
Leslie’s daughter Lauren will host a Blessing of Ashes on Thursday March 7th at 11:00am. The service will be held at St. Wilfrid's Parish in North York (1675 Finch Ave West, North York ON, M3J 2G8). In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to St. Joesph’s Hospital Hamilton in Les Barber’s name St. Joseph's Healthcare Foundation (stjoesfoundation.ca)
