Len's obituary
Our hearts are forever broken to share Leonard "Len" Wayne Stout, 84, of Naples, Florida, transitioned to heaven peacefully on September 21, 2023, surrounded by his loving and devoted daughters, Jennifer, Molly, and Kelly. Born in Mankato, MN on August 31, 1939 to Virgil and Mabel Stout, Len was a kind, witty, devoted family man with a wide, infectious smile that brought a sense of humor, peace and stability everywhere he went. He was known for his loving and caring nature, always willing to help, and fiercely dedicated to his family. Dad was intricately involved and supportive in every aspect of his daughters' lives and families…he adored being Grandpa to Jordan, Katie, Douglas, Grace, Lily, and Grady, and was a constant presence cheering them on at every sideline or school event, always their biggest fan! Grandpa had a special tradition of writing poems for each grandchild's birthday and organizing scavenger hunts every Christmas morning...precious memories that hold such joy.
Len honorably served his country in the Coast Guard from 1958 to 1962. After military service, he pursued a Bachelors in Marketing and a Master of Business Administration degree at Mankato State University, where he met Mary, who he has always described as "the nicest, most loving person he ever met". After marriage, Len pursued a successful career with E.F. Johnson from 1966 to 1977 in Waseca, Minnesota. He and Mary then moved the family to the sunshine in Coral Springs, Florida in 1977, where he enjoyed a 30-year career with Motorola. Upon retirement, Dad happily fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a truck driver, “driving the open road" across the country with MC Van Kampen and other trucking companies from 1997 to 2000.
Dad enjoyed a life of laughter, love, and devotion at countless family dinners, holidays, sporting events, and literally anything "his girls" were interested in - Dad would scour the internet for information so he could learn about it too, just to have more to talk about and bond with his daughters, husbands, and grandkids.
Len is also survived by Mary Stout (still one of his best friends), his loving sister Barb, nephews Mark, Daniel, Tim, nieces Bridgid & Karen, and countless friends he kept in touch with from high school and college.
Next to his family, Dad's greatest love was being "in the action" on the soccer field as a referee, where he was recently recognized for 25 years of officiating. Reffing truly brought him immense joy, and the soccer community brightened his life with friendship, purpose, camaraderie, passion for a sport he loved fiercely, and people he loved and respected even more.
Somehow Len found time for volunteering, working in his daughter's classroom every week, as well as dedicating over 1000 hours driving a golf cart at Naples Community Hospital, where he could be found transporting weary visitors to the entrance, picking up litter in the parking lot, and even helping a nurse with a flat tire.
As much as Dad’s earthly presence is deeply missed, we will remember what he taught us: that we can always rely on FAMILY in times of need...so we will do exactly that, in everything we think, say and do…until we are together again.
“Family is EVERYTHING.”
- Len Stout
