Leo's obituary

Leo Joseph Fisher of Carbondale and formerly of Thebes, Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Carbondale Hospital at the age of 88. Leo was born in San Francisco, California to the late Herbert and Myrtia (O’Rourke) Fisher.

In his younger days, his family moved to Red Bluff, California where Leo had a paper route.  He was recognized as a dedicated and loyal employee at a young age.  Leo graduated from Red Bluff High School in 1953. After school he moved to Oakland, California and worked on wrecked cars with his brothers. He then moved to El Paso, Texas, where he began a career with the railroad and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. He retired from the railroad after a career that spanned almost 40 years. In his spare time Leo loved to watch sports and politics on television.   Leo also loved animals. He owned donkeys which he used to entertain children by giving rides.  He and his wife also raised ducks, peafowl and turkeys. They enjoyed racing their ducks in New Mexico.  Leo never met a stranger and loved to talk to anyone that would listen.  Children loved to spend time with Leo; he would indulge their every wish just to make them smile.  Leo was a generous man and donated to numerous charities throughout his life.

Leo is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan (Schaefer) Fisher; children, Terry Fisher, Karen Fisher, and Gary (Keri) Fisher; stepchildren, Karen (Bill) Carr, Janet Schneider (Jim Rekart), Dan Schneider, Bill (Pam) Schneider, Elaine Schneider (Ron Burrows), Donna (Jack) Krupinski; brother, Earl Fisher; numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.  Leo will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, other extended family members and loyal friends.

In addition to his parents, Leo was also preceded in death by his brother, Norman Fisher.
