Dear Janis, Anna, Elise and …
Dear Janis, Anna, Elise and family, I am sending my condolences. Your family have been leaders in community building, and such strong examples of warmth and generosity. Remembering this summer celebration of many milestones, and wishing you all light and gentleness in memory of Leo.
First and foremost I would like to offer my condolences. Leo will always be remembered for the generous, caring and loving man that he was. We have lost a man who was a loving father, husband and community leader! His impact and contributions will always be cherished and remembered. I send the Bottos family all of my love and support during this difficult time. Even though I didn't know Leo for long, I will never forget him.
Dearest Janis, I am so sorry, my heart and thoughts are with you and your family. I will remember his warm and kind presence and big smile. Thank you Leo for making a difference in the community and in so many people's hearts, including mine. ♥️
Dear Janis and family, I wish I had more words to share how sorry I am for your loss. I have never met Leo, he seemed like such a special person full of love, genuine care for the community and generosity. My heart goes out to you and I will hold you in my thoughts and heart.

Leo approached me about 4 years ago to start up a MenShed at Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre and I thought it was a marvellous idea! He taught me all about it and I started to gather together the men, especially those who had been more isolated. It wasn't long before we all looked forward to those boisterous Thursday mornings when Leo would break out into spontaneous and loud songs, definitely off-tune. We always greeted each other with a hug and ended with one if we could. He was such a generous man and was always thinking and open to talking about how we could better serve this community. I loved him. We became great friends and shared so many stories together, especially at our cafeteria lunches, after the program was finished. We had a passion for the Art Hives and this would often be a topic we would share. He was so kind and proud of the amazing work that his children and wife were doing for others. They are a family who loved each other and made it their mission to care for this Earth and how to make it a better place to live in. This family cared about building community. He was so excited about his new projects and was filled with life. He did not want to go. Nor do I want to say goodbye to this wonderful man and friend. I will miss him dearly and send my heartfelt condolences to his family. He made a difference in the lives of these men that he touched and he certainly made a difference to me.
Dear Janis, I would like to offer you and your family my deepest and most sincere condolences for the loss of your husband Leo. My thoughts are with you.
So very sorry for your loss Janis. My condolences to you & family

2015, Grey Nun's Catacombs
Leo had a great interest in Concordia and in buildings. I had set up
an appointment with former Dean of Fine Arts, Christopher
Jackson, to go and see the Grey Nuns, to get a sense of what it
might be as the centre of a Fine Arts campus (which had been
Christopher Jackson's dream that vanished). I invited Leo to
come along. I knew Leo knew about wiring and plumbing and
zoning from his job in Albuquerque, NM. City manager? So, down we went into the basement where there is an actual cemetery for the grey nuns who passed away, year's ago. As the hospital had
served people with Leprosy, there was fear of moving the graves. Something about potential contagion. So there they were. I remember Chris Jackson kept on saying, "this university needs
more Vision!" By that time the university had decided against
building a whole campus for Fine Arts, there. It's too bad Leo
couldn't have had a job to support that Vision, the way he did, so beautifully, with Janis's Art Hives. It would have been a wonderful job for him. Anyway, it was a lovely time, to get to know him
better and spend some time, together.

Also, Leo knew of my great interest in the first nations' traditions of the American Southwest and he gave me a set of books by the great mystery writer, Tony Hillerman, who always used these traditions as a background to his books. I will treasure, these,
even more, now. Thanks, Leo!
Dear Janis,

Shelley and I send you our love and condolences at this difficult
time. We have warm memoires of our visits with you and Leo at
our house and yours. He was such a lovely, kind man and will be
greatly missed. I have some personal memories of my meetings
with Leo that I will share in the Story section. Please give our love to all your family.

I have been thinking about the way Leo inhabited the world, his kindness, his compassion and his genuineness.
One day walking our dogs, we stopped and talked for a few minutes about his volunteer work at Maimonides. I was left thinking about how genuine and caring he was-it made me happy thinking about how warm and thoughtful he must be at the men’s group he was running there and how there are people like Leo in the world - that are solid and kind and “show-up”.
I have been thinking about Leo and Mary Oliver’s quote about how the body is a “lion of courage”. My family and I have been thinking of Leo’s and your family’s courage. Sending you all so much love.
