Nita's obituary

Lena "Nita" Johnson

July 14, 1940 – January 26, 2026

Lena "Nita" Johnson, 85, of Horton, Alabama, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2026. Born on July 14, 1940, Nita lived a life defined by service, trailblazing courage, and a spirit that remained young at heart.

Nita dedicated 37 years of her life to the Madison County Sheriff's Office. She was a pioneer in her field, holding the distinction of being the first female officer on the road in Madison County. Her dedication to law enforcement went beyond her active duty; she continued to work security for the Sheriff's Office after her official retirement and remained an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Despite the seriousness of her career, Nita possessed a playful soul and a true zest for life. A "child at heart," she was known for her competitive spirit during a good game of Aggravation or Phase 10. In her quiet moments, she found joy in the simple rhythms of farm life, spending her days feeding the chickens and collecting eggs. She was also a devoted and active member of her church community.

Nita is survived by her daughter, Linda (Terry) Wilson; her sons, Johnny Johnson and David Johnson; and her siblings, Vickie (Rick) Potash, Rosie Dean, Joyce (Barney) Blackwood, Bonnie (Woodrow) Mahan, George (Marlena) Cook, and Mike (Brenda) Cook. She was a proud grandmother to Michele (Jeremy) Lipscomb, Johnny Ray Johnson, Michael Wilson, Jaymee (Cocoa) Hilliard, and Haley Johnson. She also leaves behind multiple great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews who will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank D. Johnson; her parents, Daniel Webster Cook, Sr. and Addie VeElla (Smith) Cook; her siblings, Ida Lee Hopper, Joe Bill Cook, Webster Cook, and Tilton Cook; and her two grandchildren, Joey Wilson and Casey Johnson.

May Nita rest in eternal peace, free from pain, and may her memory continue to bring comfort to those who mourn her passing.
