Leigh's obituary
Leigh Ann Leiferman Heinze, a vibrant soul whose kindness graced every room she entered, peacefully departed this life on April 27, surrounded by her loving family. She valiantly battled cancer for many years, defying the odds with her unwavering spirit, until she gracefully surrendered at the age of 63.
Leigh was born to Ronald and Gloria Leiferman on July 4, 1960, in Omaha, Nebraska. Her Independence Day birth foreshadowed her life as a firecracker of contagious laughter and larger-than-life personality despite her petite size.
After graduating from Marian High School in 1978, Leigh attended both the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Nebraska Wesleyan University, where she nurtured her intellect and curiosity.
In 1988, Leigh ventured to Chicago, a city that would imprint itself upon her heart forever. There, she immersed herself in the Montessori teaching community at Roger’s Park Montessori School, igniting her passion for education. She developed a love for the Cubs at Wrigley Field, as well as a deep appreciation for the blues and reggae music scene around the Lincoln Park neighborhood. There she met her husband, Ken Heinze. Their union blessed them with two beautiful children, Christopher Douglas and Anna Grace.
Leigh's zest for life extended beyond the classroom as she graced numerous restaurants with her warmth and hospitality. From The University Club and the Renaissance Room in Lincoln, to Yoshi’s Cafe in Chicago, and many of the finest establishments in Omaha, including Pasta Amore, Prima 140, Zurlo’s, and Brushi’s. Leigh not only served delicious meals but also nurtured countless friendships along the way.
Throughout her battle with illness, Leigh remained a beacon of hope, never allowing her cheerful disposition to falter nor her dedication to her children to wane. She cherished every moment with her family, relishing in card games and shared memories. In her final months, she welcomed friends, coworkers, and loyal customers, their visits filled with laughter, stories, and embraces that she held dear to her heart.
Leigh is survived by her devoted husband, Ken; loving children, Christopher and Anna; mother, Gloria; and siblings John (Karen), Joe (Deana), Jim, Jeff (Angie), and Amy (Michael), along with a multitude of nieces, nephews, and foster children. She now joins her father in eternal peace.
A memorial service honoring Leigh's remarkable life will be held on Tuesday June 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Shrine. In lieu of flowers, contributions to EverLoved for the benefit of Leigh’s children would be deeply appreciated, ensuring her legacy of love lives on.
