Lawrence's obituary
Lawrence Reuben Smith, affectionately known as “Dawg” or “Smitty,” passed away peacefully at his home in Alamogordo, New Mexico, on October 14, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born on November 3, 1948, in Batavia, New York, Lawrence lived a life rooted in family, service, and fun. Lawrence grew up in Corfu, New York and lived there until he joined the United States Air Force in 1969. Lawrence served his country for 20 years before retiring in 1989. A proud veteran, he treasured his military career and the opportunity it gave him to travel the world. Following his retirement, he continued his dedication to service in civil roles with Lockheed and DynCorp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Reuben Warren Smith and Mary Barbara Hutchinson Smith; his daughter, Mary Sue Rachelle Smith; and his brother, Terry Smith.
Lawrence leaves behind his children: Rayleen Hubbard and her husband Aaron of North Richland Hills, Texas; Brooke Flores of North Richland Hills, Texas; and James Mead of Tucson, Arizona. He is also survived by his brother James Smith of Oakfield, New York, his beloved grandchildren Wyatt Hubbard, Hannah Hubbard, and Diana Smith, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A man of many passions, Lawrence enjoyed hunting, fishing, softball, pool, and golf. He was an animated storyteller whose tales were always laced with humor and could captivate a room. Known for his infectious laugh and loyalty, he was a friend to many. A lifelong Buffalo Bills fan, he cheered faithfully for his team through every triumph and heartbreak.
Lawrence lived a life of service, laughter, and love, leaving behind a legacy of love for his county. His service to United States of America will be honored with military rites, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
